pontiac serial numbers
-
is the stamped number on the engine at the front left the same number as the serial number that would be on that little spot welded plate in the front door a piller? my car is a 53 pontiac chieftain and that little plate is missing .if the engine number is not the same is the serial number anywhere else?
the engine has 7 digits in it,is that enough?
thanks for any help you can give! -
They are the same, but there should be 8 digits not 7.

the number thats number stamped on the engine is w265669. thats it 7 digits ,but i found another number that looks like it was written with a welder near the bottom back on the left side of the block thats 8 digits .its really hard to read the first four digits but it looks like it says 30464657. could that be it? i searched the frame from the front bumper to the back of the front seat and had no success . am i looking in the right place?

According to all my information (2 different books) the number on the "raised pad on the front left side of the cylinder block" should look something like P8XH1001
The first digit is a letter indicating what assembly plant the car was built.
The second digit indicates what engine i.e. 6=6 cyl & 8=8 cyl
The third digit indicastes the model year X= 1953
The fourth indicates the transmission type: H=Hydr-matic, S=Syncro-mesh, P=Powerglide
The last four number are the production numbers starting with 1001
1st question = Where did you find the numbers with the W?
Are you sure that there are 6 numbers?
The one that looks like a welder put them on is more then likely some sort of casting number.
2nd question = Can you see where the tag was affixed on the A-Pillar?
3rd. question = DO you still have the Body Plate Tag -
the w number is stamped on the raised pad on the front left of the block. i can kinda see where the tag was in the door frame but i had to scrape and melt some lead out of the door frame first (looks like a collision repair from the 50's)any way the tag is gone . where would that body plate tag be?
thanks for all your help so far. -
The Body Tag is located on the cowl right side under the hood.
I have never seen a number like you describe for an engine number, so I really don't know what you have. I wonder if the engine was re-numbered for some reason or did it come out of something else?
Are you sure it's the correct engine for that year?
Is there evidence that the car was in an accident?
Do you know any of the history?
Have you tried to contact the Pontiac Historical Society?
A lot of changes happen to a car over 55 years.
