new here, just picked up a 55 Chieftain
-
hey, my names john and i just picked up a 55 chieftain, rebuilt 287, and a supposed rebuilt transmission. i have a few questions about parts for this car, im having trouble locating them. a few things are wrong with it, but the more serious problems are the gas gauge doesnt read properly, and the transmission shifts hard. is that normal for this car? heres a shot of it as it sits today.

also can someone give me the bulb #s for the dome light and glovebox light? thanks in advance. -
Welcome to the group John
Nice looking car
Finding parts for that car is totally impossible and will never happen. Therefore I suggest you let me buy this car from you.
OK so that isn't true. My first car I owned back in 1963 was a 1955 Pontiac 2 door hardtop like yours (except for the paint).
Finding parts can be a challenge and I would suggest you look into clubs that may be near you that cater to Pontiacs, or maybe looking into the A.A.C.A. Other car people that are into Pontiacs will have a line on where to get the parts you need.
Probably one of the best sources for keeping up with your car would be to get yourself any manuals that you can, such as a chassis and body manual. There is a lot of great reading in these books.
Transmission shifts hard is relative. It should not be a rough shift but a firm one is normal for that car.
Sorry I can't be of more help but it's difficult without seeing first hand what's going on.
Best of luck with the car though and hope you stay around.

great car there I have had a 55 for the past 7 years and love it. Tough finding parts sometimes but I have a few links that could help you out if you need anything, just shoot me an email and I'll send them to you. Always nice to see someone else with the Chevys cuter sister.... oh you can check out mine at http://magicclassiccars.com/mycar.aspx and you can email me from there too.
