Hi, i own a Desoto Diplomat from 1956, and someone has asked me if i would like to sell it. I have restored most of the car, engine works, interior is in a good condition, lights work, its been recently painted. What id like to know is whether or not im being ripped off, for the guy offered $15,000 for it. thanks for your help.

Unless you spent $50,000 on a professional restoration, it sounds like an awfully good price to me. It's difficult to get an accurate estimate of a car's real worth when they're rare, because too few are sold yearly to establish any kind of "standard of value". I believe the Diplomat was the DeSoto sold overseas, which was based on the Plymouth body, wasn't it? That would make it quite rare in the U.S. Were this of the Rolls Royce or Mercedes class, "rare" might translate to "extremely valuable" but it's really just a mid-price car.

Yeah its the export desoto with plymouth body. Thanks for the info, i knew it was rare, and thus thought that it might be more valuable because of this. It got a somewhat professional restoration, like most of the interior is perfect (only the dashboard clock isnt working), but the engine, its the original one, still working.

Unfortunately I don't think rare equates to expensive.

Case in point. I have a 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass with the W-31 option. Only 250 or so made and not many survivors. I want to sell it but can't ask a rare car price for it if it's not a "popular" car.

How much do you have in the car? Will you get your money back? How many people are wanting a car like this?

You could always test the water and put it on e-bay with a high reserve and see what you get for bids.

I wouldn't be in to big a hurry to sell it until you know the worth of it to somebody.
