Vibration dampener bolt direction

Quick question: On the 6cyl Essex engines which way do you loosen the vibration dampener bolt, left or right? I need to re-seal the badly leaking timing gear cover.

I may be mistaken, but I believe that bolt also acts as the engagement point to manually crank start the engine. Look at the bolt head for an indication as to the direction that the handle will engage to start the engine - it would loosen in the opposite direction...

On my '39 it cranks clockwise (as you are looking at the engine, from the front), so it would loosen counter-clockwise.

Hope I am correct and this makes sense -

    An old saying.

    Lefty loosy

    Righty tighty.

    In most cases anyway.

I had heard that it might be left-hand threads but the bolt does have the hand crank notch so the engine does spin clockwise facing the front of the engine. So left to loosen it is apparently. Thanks.
