If you haven't already done so, type "youtube Bud Bevard" in your browser to bring up a video of Bud Bevard of Galesburg, Illinois, racing his 1939 Hudson 8 LWB sedan at Bushnell, illinois. Thr video is dated 1949, and that may be so, but I am skeptical of that date. I was at the race there when he broke the spindle as noted in the video, and I saw him race there and at many other tracks in central Illinois. I believe the video where he broke the spindle was filmed in 1951. You'll have to have sharp eyes to see it, but Bud built a Hudson pedal car for his kids and the car appears to have a 1951 Hudson grille. The toy car bears the number 600, the number of Bud's 1939 8. Also there is another video on Bud from 2007 for Bud's 80th birthday, and his racing Hudsons is mentioned there, too. He was known to be a very good autobody man. He still may be alive, so I guess I should try to look him up, since Galesburg is only 50 miles from me. I'll bet he could tell some great stories of his Hudson-racing days.

I have been digging around our local racing history and came up with this interesting pair of Photos. Our present congressman representing the 15th didtrict of Florida (R) drove several Hudsons at the local track. Eau Gallie Speedway. The track is long gone and the town merged with Melbourne, so all is lost except the pictures.

Bill Posey has driven Late Models as recently as few years ago at New Smyrna Speedway near Daytona.. One of the Good Guys for sure. In the early days he not only drove Hudsons, but shared a Hudson with my neighbor Danny Shearer. Danny used the name "Dan Dillon". That was due to his being underage AND since he lived across the street from the Speedway, He didn't want his parents to hear his name on the PA system.. LOL

These fellows were racing against V8's and doing quite well thank you..:D

As an additional chuckle to the "Bill Posey" congressman Hudson driver. I had a cousin that drove and also flagged at several central Florida tracks back in the day. I'm sure he flagged Posey in many races. The cousins name was Wilbur"Rosebud" Flower. He got the nickname in school when he played football.

    SuperDave,

I have an Uncle named Wilbur"Rosebud" Flower. His legal name is Wilbur Ellis Flower II.

He was big at the races during the 1960s. He was also a manager for the Orlando Panthers.

His daughter had a fire at her house and lost the old photos.

Been working on a family tree for over four years and we are looking for anyone who might have and old photos of Rosebud.

A few months ago I was one of the so called fortunate lottery picks, one of the last 75 picked for PINKS ALL OUT. Went to Joliet, Il. for the "SHOW' and it was the worst humid-hot day I ever experienced for racing. The car slowed down almost 2-tenths to run in the 12:80's in the quarter. The first two time runs was by the x-mas tree and ran back to back 12:86. The 3rd was by the arm drop by Rich Christiansen. Got paired with a '39 Chevy small block V8. He got the arm drop advantange on me but the Hudson torque quickly took over and I was leading at 100 feet. I would pull him when the Hudson shifted and he would pull me when his rpm would get there. It was back and forth and I lead at the 1/8 mile by maybe a 1/2 fender. It was back & forth untill the final 75 feet in the quarter -he pulled me on the top end and beat me probably by 3/4 car lenght. He ended his run with a 12:81 & I ran 12:80 at 102 mph. Most exciting race I have been in for a long time. Really pumped me up. Steve #2 son was with me and he said Christianson threw his shoulders back in amazement when my car launched and I pulled the tires about 8 inches. He watched me all the way down the track and when he saw the 12:80, he pointed to the crowd and then pointed to the scoreboard when he saw my time. I can only imagine what he thought when he saw "flathead (6)" on my hood. Oh what the hell is this guy doing here. Well anyway we showed him. I just wish the weather would have been better so when could run in the 12:60's. The race was filmed with the arm drop and the show will air Aug. 19 at 7 PM on the Speed Channel. I don't know whether my time trial will be aired or not. Will have to wait and see. Randy Maas

A FLATHEAD STRAIGHT SIX?!?!? YOU KIDDIN' ME?!?!?

Great story, Randy! Alot of people throw "estimated" ET numbers around as if a 10-second quarter is easy. I've driven a '68 Cutlass with a 427 Chev stuffed in that would run 12.67 with 4:56 gears and a 3500 stall. That was a fast car... we never lined up with another street car that could keep up.

    Ol Racer,

what kind of fuel injection is that you are running? I know Warren Sapp made a few back in the 60's but have only seen one unit at the Nationals in Auburn Indiana a few years ago.

Bet that Hudson engine is going to make some power...

    PacerRacer,

The F/I is a hodgepodge of Hillborn & Enderle pieces I compiled over time. I became concerned if would even work so recently I sent everything out to Hilborn in Ca. to flow test but after they seen homemade (and not all Hilborn) they sent over to Gene Adams Performance to test and provide a baseline. Gene at 69 still races a Hemi dragster, but started Racing an Olds 88 remembered Hornets as his nemeses and agreed to take on the test....

Been working on this car for yrs, at first just to duplicate and see what my old 366" circle race Mtr would do on the Strip, but now, I want to make a statement to the v8 muscle car crowd here that think im wasting time & money building a 6...

This is my 2nd time around though... Last yr I had built a a Mtr using a well used block (only 308 could find locally) with 4" bore that I sleeved every hole back but after a lot of work & money it just wouldnt seal causing me to rebuild another during the past yr....

    Ol Racer,

when you say couldn't seal do you mean the head gasket or from the sleeves?

I have used a sealer that you fill the water jackets with then pressure-rise the block to force the sealer into every place. it sets up making the engine ready to use in about 24 hours.

what do you use for a head gasket for a 4" bore? I am building a twin turbocharged 308 for a gasser to drag race that has 4" bore and don't know

yet what to use for a head gasket.

Your engine is one sweet looking beast! how about some of the specs on it

for those of us that haven't heard them before?

    thanks for your time,

Hey PaceRacer, I plan on being at the NHRA open at Indy in Oct. Any chance you can be there and hopefully race? Hope to have the new head from Rudy & Chuck to try. I knew about the project several weeks before it was announced. They asked be to try it and am happy to do so. Hopefully will pick up some time. Would really be great if olracer had his ride ready and needed some vacation time and come to Indy.

    Randy,

let me know the date and I will come on out. The new gasser won't be ready by then and the PaceRacer has destroyed the tranny... cheep $50 350 turbo with a manual pak from B&M lasted 5 years... guess I should not complain!

I do not think I will have a dual range Hydro in the PaceRacer by then but I'm going with one for the extra low first gear and other features.

I do need to get a double roller timing chain set from you for the new engine.

got a lot done but still need to do the ladder bar and 9" rear swap and that

is going to take some time for me.

If you want you can use one of my race hydro's that were built by Gus Souza several years ago. No charge and I could meet you halfway with it

OR I have a turbo 400 built for the strip if you want to use it. The hydro is a good trans and works well, but the 400 is easier to handle and only three bots for the convertor compared to 30 some bolts for the torus setup. 3300-3500 stall is the ticket and I am running a 355 gear and 29.5 inch tall tire. Let me know if I can help to get you ready.

    Randy,

I wish could attend Oct but may be only 'shaking down' the Car locally at that time because slow going with other tasks interfering.. Wouldnt mind attending few larger Events after sorting out any 'bug's.

You have been a big help on my Motor Project again with both Parts and advice.

    Thanks,

OR: I think the red '40 is the car now raced by Dany Spring, back when it was owned by Bill Albright. However, the photo would have to be older than 3 years...locale and configuration are right, though...;)
