If it wasn't for Bad Luck...

    Ever heard the old saying
If it wasn't for Bad Luck I wouldn't have any Luck at all!

I had a trip planned to a job interview in Montana this coming week but my truck started stalling and throwing trouble codes.

Looks like either the Injector Pump or the Pump Mounted Driver, either
way I won't be going to Montana this week, I can't trust the truck to make the drive.

Of course I had both the IP/PMD replaced March/08 - doubtful either is under warranty now :(

So the Montana job will probably not be an option, I won't know until I speak with them tomorrow.

That seems to be the narrative of my life the last couple of years, sometimes all I can do is laugh and try to move forward!

One door closes, another opens...I sent a resume to a company in Bremerton (about 15 miles from my home) yesterday (Sat). I got a call today (Sun) they want to interview me - so maybe finally something good will happen :D
They say adversity builds character - I don't know how much more "character" I can get ;)

Dan... You pointed to the actual answer... there is a reason for all things. Like most of us, I have had the door slammed when I thought the opportunity of a lifetime was in view only to find that the real opportunity was appearing nearby. I truely wish you well and that the local opportunity becomes "The RIGHT place for your skills".

    Best to you.

Good luck Dan! I've been layed off twice in the last three years due to closings and the economy, and have been lucky enough to move right into another job before my severence ran out. Networking paid off for me! But, the days of having a job for life is a thing of the past. Companies don't care about the loyal employees anymore, only the almighty dollar!

    You all are awesome!

I wish I could win the lottery and bring you all together and meet you in person!

I pretty much whiffed the interview today (at least I don't think I did that well) - it's frustrating being a programmer these days because there is 50x more things to know and try and remember...you never know what to prepare for.

The company in Montana is going to do another phone screen with me on Wednesday and then if that goes well they would step up and help me with expenses to meet inperson - so that opportunity is not dead yet.

I also got 3 calls today on other job opportunities - I am praying it's just a matter of timing right now...

I am narrowing down the problem with the truck and should be able to order parts tomorrow - another friend is going to help me with that.

Thanks again for all the encouragement!

    Dan:

Good to hear you have interviews coming. We wish you luck. Just a thought, I usually kept two or 3 jobs at a time to prevent hardtimes, Runs you ragged, but I was too busy to worry about it.

On a seperate note, I got two pups a month ago, brother and sister(different dads I think) born the same time. The male looks like a baby Doberman(sp) born with no tail and short nose, but black and big paws. The female is tan and white mostly, tail has tan, white and black colors. About 10/12 weeks old and getting fast, they stay under my feet so I have to be careful not to step on them. The first dog(s) we've had since 2004, first time I've ever had two at one time. My wife really likes them, makes it a lot easier to adjust. The cold weather we have now is hard on them, but I have a protected room on the back of my garage to keep them in with access to the back yard(poop area). Good luck on your new adventure job hunting. Bob in AL

    Hey Dan,

If you need some help pulling codes or anything on the truck let me know.

    I have a OBD1 and 2 basic code reader.

I'm here in PO as well and have a sorta light week this week.

    Good luck,

    Jeff

Hey thats not nice. We have people that have worked for us over 30 years and are over the retirement age and still work. Belive me the employers have been made to be this way just to stay in business. The problem is not with the employers the problem is with the GOVERMENT and lazy ass people that want a free handout. Try to be a small business these days. If the taxes, govt regs and belive me on this one BS LAW SUITS BY THE EMPLOYIES don't get you then the for crap economy will.

I mean how many of you guys know someone that has put in a bogus "work related" injury claim??? That crap hurts everyone!!!!

As a employer I'm doing my part. So don't pigeon hole me in with your comments.

    Dusty

P.S. Just for your info I've paid many tens of thousands of dollars keeping up the guys health insurance even when they did not have the required time in.

I hope you are doing your part and digging real deep for your fellow man

Oh one more thing I wish you all the luck Rambo sorry for ranting on your turf

Your comments are well taken , and your concern for fellow humans wellbeing admireable . . I think we all would agree that small business and big corporations operate on an intirely different set of rules . I would have to agree that the bigger the company the more likely , but not allways , employees are treated as "tools of the trade ' and are expendable any time it suites their whim . I too wish you well DAN , My son is going thru the same right now and it is tuff . He got another job , yeah 650 miles from home and is under circumstances that he can't pick up and move , so once a month he comes home . Don't sound too bad untill you say 12 times a year you get to see your familly . BUD

Hang in there. Things usually seem to happen for a reason and end up working out. There are good companies out there that are looking to pick up and KEEP good employees. Thats my main reason for sticking with small companies. In a large corp., EVERYONE is a number.

As far as luck, my van started hard this morning (12 degrees out) and started spewing oil all over the road half way to work. I had to leave it in a parking lot while I left town for the day for work. Although it sucks, I was reminded that I'm lucky I decided not to take it on a 1400 mile trip for the holidays:( That would have sucked much more...

Hang in there, things will get going soon... When I started with my company everyone knew everyone else. Our company cared about the people. The CEO played first base on our city soft ball team. Forty-four years later, the company has been sold six or seven times and we have more vice presidents than most banks and none that I know by anything other than Mister or Sir! We are also downsizing and I got walking papers with the last lay off. I will most likely be forced into retirement because I am finding out that I am overqualified, stuck in a time warp, not consistant with new technology (I hold multipule joint pattens) and several other comments that they have not told me. What they have not told me is I am too expensive, cost too much to relocate me or flat out that I am too old. My only options seem to be WalMart greeter or parts boy at Home Depot. Life is good, but I did not really want to quit working. I may be over the hill and I am not as good as I once was; but I am as good once as I ever was-- to steal a line from a country western song..... Maybe I should run for public office....?

Keep your chin up Dan. Maybe you could do some of your restoration work on the side to help make ends meet.

    I wish you luck too.:)

Hang in there Dan. Keep a positive and successful outlook. It looks like you are receiving some opportunities.

Brownie, you have expressed my feelings when I was let go last June. Hang in there. You have a great amount of knowledge and tallent.

Even though were are of the older generation, we can still renew that youthful optimism and expectations within us that we had in our youth. I still remember being let go from jobs in my youth and another one would come along. It didn' bother me much back then. Why should I let it bother me now. Or the serious illness's that had me laid up with the chance of no recovery and very real possibility of death. My faith in Gods promise to provide for my needs has sustained my family in the bad as well as the good times.

Now that I have cheered myself up. I wish for both of you the best in finding really good jobs.

Bad luck is rampant these days - tho my problem is not really bad luck.

After our munificant govm't gave us a 5% COL raise last year - they gave us none this year, so that's only 2½ % per year. I'd like to go back to the 3% a year, thank you. They said no COLA's this year because their indicators showed we didn't need one - they ain't shopping at the same store or buying gas at the same station as I am.

Right now Memphis is colder than Alaska - my utility bill last month was $50 higher than the month before, and will probably be higher this month.

Took a look at my credit card statement - after years of 12-13% they just jacked it up to 18%. Don't think that's very nice - I 've had that card for 23 years, paid it off a few times, always made my payments on time and usually more than the minimum. What's that about customer loalty?? Well, I just put it in the drawer and won't be using it for a long while. Oh, the minimum payment, with the 5% interest hike, went up $50.

And, oh yes. My with-holding on my military annuity went up in January - so I'm getting $15 less than I was before. Oh, well, more money they'll have to send me at the end of the year. I'd rather do that than have the money each month, no matter how hard it is to make the bills and pay the grocery bill. (buying a lot of Wal Marts $1 frozen dinners - but at least I ain't down to cat food - yet).

This keeps up and I'll have to go back to work - Wal Mart beckons.

On the plus side, at least, the car's still running (more or less), my health is good for my age and things are worse elsewhere.

Y'all take care and enjoy the winter!!!!
