At the base of the fender wells on my 48 Commodore the cloth has rotted away. In fact, it wasn't until I put surface mounts speakers on the kickboards and removed the inner wheel well covers that I noticed the piece of rotten rubber with the rotten cloth that was once attached to wheel well cover and the frame. Does anyone have a picture of what this looked like before it went the way of all God's creatures? It was a piece of rubber, stapled and screwed to a cloth backing, and the cloth was covered with black undercoating paint.

Jason, I believe K-Gap has repros of these pieces.

Park and all, I just pulled the fenders and wells off the 51,not in real bad shape,but the well aprons were sort of rotten and tattered. I pried off the staples and took them to an upholstry shop and asked the fellow to repro them-no big deal he said,plan to get them tomorrow.Originals were of canvass,i plan to get back heavy vinyl. Rebuilt the wells with two patch panels and some "Kitty hair",in fact just finished at 5:30 today-tired and the scotch was rewarding. Once I blow on some epoxy tomorrow and then some TEK-II they should look like new

Fellows, I got them back today-paid the fellow twenty bucks,made of scrap leather,just so happens that I finished the fender wells today also. Told him to save the old ones for future reference.This fellow is very slow and we sort of have a deal to fix my things on the cheap when he is not busy . My problem is pictures but will go over to the information systems and see if my buddie can do it for me-I need to learn how anyway

I tried to order the aprons from KGap but had to ask for a refund from Paypal. Coverton, if you have pictures of what you had done handy, I sure would like to see them to see if I can get my upholstery guy to make me a set.

I've seen the originals in very good condition before and I've seen as I remember it two basic colors of canvas. A kind of tan color was most common I think and a greenish canvas was also used.

They also came with a piece of flat steel about a half inch wide that ran along between the frame and the bottom of the inner fender.

The flat steel was slid into a seam sown in the bottom of the canvas.

What I did was acquire some heavy canvas from an old tarp, cut the pattern and had the seam sewn in and attached it with mechanics wire through the same same original staple holes.

They turned out great, looked very original and cost almost nothing.

Do you have a picture of what the piece looks like once it is attached to the frame? I have enough old rotten canvas to see how it attached to the fender well, but not to the frame.

Laurie Fromm makes nice reproduction canvas. She is in roster under NY

It doesn't attach to the frame, the weight of the flat steel piece keeps it down and kind of gets sandwiched between the bottom of the inner fender and the frame. It's been a while but that's what I recollect.

My wife makes the inner fender covers and sell them for $30.00 a pair. She has a marine off white canvas and a black canvas (not marine fabric). Let me know if you are interested in ordering any.
