    A gent who post on an antique tractor board I frequent swears by ATF for unsticking engines. His procedure is to jack up the rear, so rear tires are off the ground, and leave it in high gear; Remove spark plugs and look down with light to ensure that its not full of corn or some such; put ATF in each cylinder, and leave it for a month or so. Then, start giving the back tire a little bump every time he walks by. If it moves a little, bump it back the other way to the original position. Keep moving it back and forth, a little at a time, until it is loose. If it bumps a little, but never completely loosens up, a valve is stuck, and disassembly is in order. He has kept track over the last 30 or so years of doing this, and exactly 90% of stuck engines have come loose with this program, without any disassembly.

    There are a lot of different prefered methods. A fity-fifty mixture of ATF and kerosene seems to be popular with a lot of experienced guys. In this case the corn was my point, however. Hmm...I wonder if one used hydrochloric acid first and then followed that with a mixture of Rolaids and ATF?

    on my 25 Hudson, I pulled the plugs and poured Kroil down the holes and filled the crank case with diesel waited 2 weeks then pulled the head,the cyinders looked good but 9 of the valves were stuck , a can of seafoam and one of PB blaster and using a screwdriver to rotate the valves I got them unstuck and the engine turned over, not advocating this approach just saying what worked for me. afterwards I poured clean motor oil in all cylinders and valve openings.

    I've been messing around with old engines since I was 11 years old. about 58 years. Unstuck many engines using ATF and other such solvents. All but one ( a 29 ford) ended up with having to eventually doing what I should have done in the beginning... remove the head and clean everything up. Some actually ran pretty good for a while. Most ended up with valve problems. A small amount of rust on a valve seat will cause expensive problems SOONER than later..

    You're always going to want to put a new head gasket on it so I say always pull the head. I know a guy who got one running nice, parked it for the winter, head gasket leaked coolant into the cylinders, stuck good. Not to mention you will want to at least lap the valves. Just my opinion.
