Exhaust manifold question
-
Does anyone know the difference between a 1956 exhaust manifold and a 1953 exhaust manifold for a 308? Can the '56 be used on a '53?
Ed -
If you change the exhaust manifold, you will also have to change the intake manifold. You can't mix early and late intakes to exhaust..Also..The outlet of the 56 exhaust is 1/4" larger and at a different angle. I suppose you could make an adaptor to match the pipes up if you want to use a Hash intake and exhaust on a 53..

The 55-56 exh.manifold has only 3 bolts that hold it together to the intake and 48-54 has 4[3 studs and 1 nut and bolt on the outer ear. It is also more open inside and confiquired differently. Intake and exhaust gasket to block is still the same though. -
Thanks to all for your responses. I picked up the exhaust manifold (for ten bucks) and will now try to find the neccesary intake manifold. I expect it will cost me considerably more.

I have an extra 55-56 intake manifold if anyone is interested. Great shape. I media blasted it, no cracks or damage, and painted it. I need to fund my trip to Nationals this year so I am selling some extra stuff. $200 obo plus shipping from Denver. The exhaust manifold is available too if you want to pay the extra shipping costs.

Ski4life65:
Thanks for the offer, but for now, I'm working on the exhaust manifold I have and I'm thinking that if I block off the heat riser I might be able to use the 56 exhaust manifold with my 53 intake. We'll see how it goes.

Nick:
Where are you in Ohio. My son will be passing through next month and might be able to do the switch.
However, please be forwarned that my manifold is in somewhat rough condition, although there are no cracks. The main issue is that the studs to connect to the intake were broken off and when the stubs were removed the holes were left a little ragged. If we trade you might want to look at it first.
Ed
