Drive a 100 year old Road!

    ON May 16 the NW HET chapter is having a Hudson Drive/Meet in my backyard. http://www.members.tripod.com/NWChapterHET/ Please come if you are at all interested in Hudsons or Historic roads.



    Maryhill Loops road started as a test road built by Sam Hill in 1909-1913. This was the first paved road in the Pacific Northwest according to several books I have read and http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/loops.html



    We will start at a recreation of Stonehenge at 10am on the Lewis and Clark Hwy (Hwy14) in Washington State. East on Hwy 14 where Hwy 97 intersects. From there we will drive on the Loops road, which is only opened twice a year to the public. We will continue down to the Columbia River and have a picnic/meeting at Maryhill State park (peach beach). Concluding with a visit to the Maryhill Museum to celebrate Founders Day (Sam Hill).

    Those old 2-lane roads were what our Hudsons were designed to be driven on. I will be the first to freely admit that, by today's standards. these old roads are quite dangerous. While we hate to see them widened to 4-lane, we will admit they are much safer and still fun to drive.



    I belong to a group called American Road which is dedicated to the old highways. We have a quarterly magazine, American Road, which features a lot of great stuff on the old roads - not just the roads but the things that go along with them, like old buildings, bridges, etc.

    Thank you Mr. Burr for those great links. I'm finding I am quite interested in early roads. Your assessment of the safety of early roads is probably accurate. I will have to explore the American Road magazine more.

    If you have never been here you should consider going. Only 2 hours from Portland. 3.5 from Seattle. Come to a meet where you get to drive your Hudson!:)

    I agree that those two land blue highways are more fun and more interesting to drive on and the drive is at a more relaxed less stressful pace, the interstate is really dull but I'd defaintely prefer to be on them after dark..

    On JUne 13th I'm planning to go to the car meet in Manchester, VT, which has Hudson as the featured American car this year. The roads over to Manchester from here (Exeter, NH) are fun, espcially as one moves farther west into Vermont. Are any other readers here going to that meet?

    Yea, I read about that in the newsletter. I would love to go as well but dont think I will make it.

    According to the article that road is only open twice a year for 4 hours each time.

    Curious as to why that is? To preserve it or what?

    The road is open to walking or biking year round. Maryhill Museum owns the road and about 7000 acres surrounding it. They limit use for preservation and probably insurance.



    There is a hillclimb race every year put on by SOVERN of Seattle for their cars only. This year it is in September and coincides with Maryhill's Car is King weekend 26-27. On the 26th the road will be open again from 12-2 according to www.Maryhillmuseum.com event calendar.

    The Hudsons shared the road with early Fords, a Corvair club from the Tri-Cities and some skateborders. I'm a new member of the NW HET chapter and look forward to seeing the others again soon.

    Just incase anyone wanted to see pictures. There was a third 51 sedan however I never got a picture of it. My car would not start:mad: and so there are none of me either.
