Valve timing

Has anyone had to move the timing gears one notch over to get the proper piston and valve synchronization? Our 1936 Eight cyl. has not run right since it was assembled. It has an aluminum cam gear. Possibly a gear mis-match?

Either the gears are not meshed properly (dots not aligned), or the crank gear has been put on backwards. There is nothing else that would upset the valve timing with an alloy gear.

The dots were aligned before this teardown, but it seams that the proper valve timing works with the dot on the crank gear one tooth ahead.

The timing dot is on the second tooth past the keyway to the left.
The centre of the keyway is at the end of one tooth, the second tooth to the left after that is where the dot should be.
