oil pressure problem 350sm
-
alright heres the story and i need some options and ideas as fast as i can get them. i just had my engine apart including cam intake rockers pushrods lifters put them all back in and got it running fine, then i noticed i didnt have crap for oil pressure maybe 15 while driving, when i stopped it hit 0. it was also starting to knock. i put a new oil pump in it and it was fine idleing at 30 psi and driving around 40-45psi. 20 minutes later it was back down to 15 and when i got home and stopped it was at 0. i pulled my distributer and there is alot of heavy wear in the center of the cam gear teeth. what could be causing the oil pressure problem and the wear pattern on the gear? thanks for your help

Drain the oil and look to see if you have wiped the bearings. There should be some metalic residue in the oil if the bearings are gone.

take the plate off the pump and look for wear, this can only be caused by fine metal particles that can come from ANY failed part, which means you need to tear down and find it and clean up things, don't neglect to flush out all oil galleys in the block and crank When puting in a new dist drive gear put some assembly lube on it. Before you fire up a fresh engine put some oil in the pump when you put it on and use a drill {prefferabely 1/2 inch so you get some muscle to force the oil thru things } and long screw driver shaft with a deep well socket taped on it to keep it on the oil pump shaft and crank up pessure to fill all oil galleys and bearings, this does the same as if you where runing the engine without takeing a chance on ruining any bearings and other parts. That cam has gotta go , put in new cam bearings, PRELUBE THEM and align properly or you will have more trouble BUD
