Voltage variance in '66 Nova

Hi, I have a '66 Nova that I'm restoring and today I'm trying to install the stereo. My problem is that through the accessory terminal on the fuse block I have a voltage that cycles from 12 to 9 to 12 to 9 and so on. If I hook directly to the battery there is a consistent 12 volts. The only change from stock on this cars electrical system is a chrome one wire alternator with an internal voltage regulator. What's causing the voltage to cycle?
