gyromatic transmittion on 50 dodge coronet.
-
Looking to change the fluid on my 50 dodge . Has the gyromatic trans. in it. There are several plugs and possible holes to drain and fill but need to know the right ones? I am guessing that i need to take one out till the fluid runs out as i fill but there are several at different levels on the side of it?
thanks. -

are you speaking of the gear box or the fluid coupling ?--The fluid drive coupling refill hole is accessed under the matt on the passenger side. look for a hole/plug in the bell houseing about 2 inch dia. remove the plug and turn the engine untill the fill hole is at 2 o'clock, that is the correct fill level. change once a year in normal service or 10,000 miles. use universal tractor hydraulic fluid ISO32 -

I wish i new what i was talking about? Lets put it this way I know theres fluid in this gyromatic trans. but i dont know how to drain it or where to fill it?
There are a few different places that it looks like the fill bolts.
Thankfull for all advise! -
Kinda hard to say OK THAT ONE and know we're talking about the same bolt. DO THIS, In you're browser type in DODGE GYROMATIC TRANSMISSION, might want to try useng the words refill--diagram--service--things like that in conjunction. It will bring up a lot of sites you can research and some pics to see how it's made and functions. Be pateint and look at a lot of them and you will find what you need. Hope this helps, BUD

I too have just gotten my 49 dodge running, w/ Gyromatic . I've just checked the fluid level in transmission. Found 3 metal plugs on pass. side of tranny, they go top to bottom, bottom is drain, middle fill hole. Manual I have states use 10W oil, when I pulled middle hole and stuck my pinky in I discovered red tranny fluid? I hope to be able to find 10w, and drain. IF not has anyone used muti visc like 10/30? I'm thinking that the tranny and fluid drive are two seperate systems and don't share the same fluids?
While on initial test drive charging system was NG, & ran off battery till died, but tranny wouldn't shift by itslelf in low or high range. I noticed some solenoids & wires etc and hope when I get good 6+V will shift and that tranny fluid hasn't caused any problems, I'll try to find the fill for fluid drive and some tractor fluid? Got a pretty good shop manual from prev owner & been a great help, but not much on gyro, has me wishing it had a 3peed....ANY hints wouldbe appreciated. -

The RED stuff would be automatic trans fluid and perfectly OK, the tractor fluid is OK also and cheaper. DO NOT USE MULTI VISCOSITY OIL . The differances in 10 wght oil and trans fluid or hydraulic fluid is the fluids will not thicken as much in cold as the 10 wght. Modern fluids actually better in my opinion than the 10 wght. Yes, 2 diff components, 2 diff oils. What makes the fluid drive work is just what it says . 2 opposeing vanes/turbines whatever you want to call them that are not physically connected , with the one driven by the engine building pressure of sorts { it's the thickness of the oil that makes one turn the other, not sure if I explain this in terms of what they call the parts, but you get the idea } in the houseing to make the other one turn. Too thick an oil would loose the no clutch feature, thus no multi grade stuff, and too thin or low on fluid you would be running the engine like crazy to get it to pull . Hope this helps. That's tractor HYDRAULIC fluid . BUD
