what guage metal for patch work?
-
HI, this is my first post here and new member. I have a question on what guage metal to use for patch welding on my 49' supersix. The very front edge or lip of the hood is rusted out pretty bad. I want to try and patch it but from the looks of the thin metal for the hood, I figure its going to be a pain. Anyone have any suggestions?........

Maybe get in touch with 'Bent Metal'. He would know and may have done a repair such as this in the past.

Repair suggestions kinda depend upon the extent of the rust - can you post a picture? -
Hudson used 19 gauge metal, originally. 18 will work, but tougher to shape. 20 will work as well, but not as thick as the original.

I agree with Russell and Rambo's Ride, we need to see some pictures of your problem. From what I have seen, the fit-up where the fender profile meets the hood edge is usually bad. They won't have the same radius. I like to separate the inner panel (hood latch panel) from the hood and go from there. Once all the holes have been patched, the fit looks good and some kind of primer or paint has been applied to the inside, then weld it back together.
IMHO, that's what I would do.
Oh! Don't forget to check the hinge area where it mounts to the hood. The hood is usually cracked and bent there, right in the middle. I recamend fixing the crack, straighten the hood AND remove the hinge so it can be cleaned and lubricated. A binding hinge is the reason for that area to be messed up.
