Yet another scam
-
This evening I was outside with my youngest daughter and I missed a phone call. As I was checking my caller ID, my wifes phone rang. The number on my ID was an odd number , like 25061. My wifes call was similar, like 98340...
She answered the call, it was automated " This is Visa debit account services calling to let you know your account had been locked for security, press 1 to proceed and re-activate your account. " She cautiously pressed 1 to hear " Enter your 16 digit card number to proceed."
At that point she hung up and called our bank. They confirmed this very common scam where the automated system will prompt you for all of your information and take you to the cleaners.
BEWARE if you get these calls. It makes me sick that people earn their living stealing from people with these kind of scams. I wouldn't have posted this but I have never heard of this one before. The crazy thing is within 20 minutes, all three of our (mobile) phone lines received the same call...

G'Day Matt,
You have to be very careful these days, we have a number Down Under to call and they put us on a
DO NOT CALL register, I did that some years ago on our home phone and never had a bogis call since, I believe that we can now do the same thing with mobile numbers. -
We have the same registery Up Top for all land line and cell phones.

We are on the "do not call" list also, but they still call! -
I don't think scammers are going to be concerned that they might be breaking that particular law.

Yup, you got that right! For the past few months, I have been getting 2-3 calls a day (on my answering machine), with these type of scams. No company name given, no phone number - they 'autodial', and are waiting in the wings for a response so they can 'hook' you in...I don't think scammers are going to be concerned that they might be breaking that particular law.
I am home now (another victim of the economy, effective this past Monday
) and managed to intercept one yesterday - As soon as I started asking questions -
- What is the name of your company?
- What is your address & phone number?
- Can I call you back?
They hung-up on me, of course... No calls today (yet). I am actually looking forward to playing with them a bit, and maybe getting enough information to turn-in to the authorities... -
I keep getting them on my company cell phone about signing up for a auto warranty. Wonder if my 1929 Hudson can be covered ?
-
We had that same scam here, it is wide spread, What they know about the one that hit here was that it originated in Spain and Italy but they can't get any closer to the source because of the ability to use fake email accts or something like that. Our local banks took the hit for customers for about 40 grand combined .

we have a scam going on here where they phone you and ask you to update the warranty on your car. I respond by going along with it and then when they ask for the car I tell them a 1954 Hudson and they hang up on me.

For a while I was getting calls for people who used to live here. Several a week. I ran searches, on the numbers showing up on my caller ID and discovered that just possibly these may be bill collectors.
So, keeping in mind that there are those numbers that, if you call back, you can wind up with phone charges, I called these numbers as they came up. My spiel to them (yes, I got a live person) was "The person you are trying to contact no longer lives at this residence and any further calls to this number, I will take the matter to my attorney." One by one the calls stopped. I'm down to one, which is better than 6 or 8.
Thing of it is, I have found in the past that if you suddenly start finding phone calls on your bill that you didn't make, you can call your phone company and, usually, they will be taken off with no charge to you. So it's reasonably safe to call these numbers.
In the case of "your auto warranty is about to expire" you should know that in the first place - so just ignore it. I have both caller ID AND an answering machine - so can just let the person calling rave on. Then decide whether to call back or not.
Threatening to take the matter to your attorney seems to work quite well, by the way. As I said, as soon as I mentioned that "A" word I got apologies and "we'll change our records immediately"!!!
Now if I could just get the former residents mail stopped..............
