Help with restore of Straman 300ZX Convertible
-
Hello
I am about to start restoring a R. Straman 1986 300ZX Convertible and the body pretty solid and so is the interior is in good condition. What I help need help with is the engine has 250,000 miles and starting breaking down. On a car of this year would it really matter if I got a new engine or would it be best to try to keep it as orginal as possible and rebuild it
Thank for any help or comment

For your application an newer engine would be best. These years have a poor reputation for engine durablity. New, in this case is good!!!

Ted, you are very much mistaken, the VG30E engine is known to last well into 300K. You can easily find a used 84 to 89 300ZX non turbo engine or a Pathfinder/Maxima VG30E at a junk yard for a few hundred dollars. I have owned 33 1984-89 300ZX's, the most important thing is to make sure the timing belt is changed on schedule as these are interference engines and when the belt breaks, the pistons eat the valves.
