Packard Engines

Hi. I am not a Packard man but I have a ? about Packard L-head engs. I have an old Chilton Manual that shows that in 1954 Packard had a 359 c. i. , 212 h. p. in line 8. Is this correct? If so is it a derivative of their 356 c. i. eng.? Thanks. Norm

The 1954 senior engine ,which is 359 ci and 212 H.P., is a bored and stroked verson of the Packard 327. This engine is one year only, 1954 ,and onlyin the top of the line senior models.

The straight 8 327ci is a pretty good motor. It is a 6 volt positive ground....R.V.

I am looking for thoughts on a 1946 Packard Clipper 6 Engine Transplant.
I DO NOT want a small block Chevy. I am considering maybe a early Olds V8 (303) with hydramatic or a Buick nailhead if I could put something besides a dynaflow behind it. Maybe an early Caddy. I guess the Packard V8 is probably pretty wide, and only bolts to the ultramatic. i want a stock, smooth, quiet engine. -
AFAIAC, keep it all Packard. The Packard V8 is about the smoothest, strongest of the mid-50s V8s and most of all, it is a Packard. If you want an automatic, now there are kits to mate it to a GM Turbo 400 or a Mopar 727 Torqueflite. The Ultramatic, when built by the guy who knows how, is not a bad transmission. If you are interested in the best Packard V8 rebuild available, contact me off list at PackardV8@comcast.net

I just purchased a 55 Clipper with the 320 V8. What recommendations for oil wieght/brand and Auto Tranny fluid are there? Also, I will definitely need to do the conversion work for unleaded gas(no cat, though). Where can I get the parts for this?

I use 20W50 Castrol in my '56, (any oil 10W30 and above should be ok) and Type F in the trans. As for the conversion to unleaded gas, you'll have to remove the heads for that, to put in hardend seats. I use lead substitute in my '56, and haven't had any problems so far.

Just found out I have a 352. It isn't the original engine but, I won't complain.
