Driving to 2009 National ?

I would love to say at this point that I am driving the Pacemaker to the national next year. I have been planning on it, but there are a lot of obstacles between here and there. For me, it would be 550 miles and 10 +hours of interstate. 477 miles of that is I-75, so getting lost shouldn't be an issue :) I'd love to take only the Hudson, but 6 people with luggage is a full load, even though a few of the people are small.

I need to do some work on the car first, the major items being steering work and fuel tank refurb and line replacement. Also, I need to finish putting seatbelts in.

I'm just throwing this out there to see what others are thinking. A caravan of Hudsons moving up I75 would be a cool sight too, maybe a "Twin H Power Tour". The latest WTN has a scheme in there regarding this, it would be great if it works out. At this point I'll say "I'm in!". Of couse, my better half is not sold on it completely yet.

    Who's driving their Hudsons?

We booked our rooms about 10 days ago. We'll be driving the Hornet up (wish the convertible would be done, but not going to make it) from South Central Texas all the way to Pontiac. I'd love to be part of a caravan and noticed the ad by Dan McNichol in the current WTN, but haven't double checked the dates, etc., yet.

The car we're taking led it's life on the east coast in the No. VA., MD., W. Virginia area and until I drove it to TX, it had never been out of a 150 mi. radius, EXCEPT when she was made in Detroit. First time back in 57 years, for the old girl (the car that is, not my wife).

By the way, it's 1448 miles, one way from here.

I booked my rooms right after the Marlboro National and have all intentions of driving my Hudson. It is still not road ready but I hope to make it, hoping for Doc's meet as a long shakedown drive. The distance is not great about 5 to 6 hours.

The black cloud on the horizon is that with the economy and the down turn in steel production the recruiting department along with my job were eliminated the end of Oct. They say when things pick up the department will be reinstated, but I hope to be working somewhere else by then.

Worse case scenario, I will run one or two long hour daily trips. 10 hours round trip, 8 hours at the meet.

I've put just over 1000 trouble free miles on my car since April, a significant increase over last year. I feel good about the reliability of the car. There's always something to be done, but nothing that has left me stranded or compromised my safety. My longest drives have been 1-1.5 5 hours one way, but I have done that several times with no issues.

I would like to drive it to Docs meet in 09 as well, but we have to go to a wedding in FL the folllowing week which might be too much.

My biggest concern is time, ideally for the trip to Pontiac I would like to have at least 7 days. In reallity, I may squeezing it into 4 including travel.

I hope to see a lot of drivers there, including mine. One of my favorite things about the Hudsons is how driveable they are compared to some other vintage cars. It makes a statement to have so many driven to the meets.

I am hoping to drive the Hudson home to Detroit from Denver. I bought my 1951 Hornet in Saginaw Mi. 28 years ago when I was 15. I have been dragging it all over the Country for years and it might be nice to actually drive it. My wife and I have already put in for vacation that week. I can't wait.

My '39 should make it from east of Flint:) Hopefully I will finish the original engine and put it in place of the temporary engine that is in there now.

I asked to be put on the Emergency Help registry too. I have tools, a place to work and some Hudson repair experience...

Hi This is Hudsonnut, I haven't been on for awhile due to "traveling and sickness", but was checking this out tonight. I was enthused about the interest in people driving their hudson to the '09 National.

If you can get that Hudson on the road to the '09 national - do it!!!! it'll be GREAT Fun!! You'll never regret it - it may take work and money (where to get it is another thing I know), but it would be worth it! As you know the reward for all of your work is the smiles from the people on the road and all the praises you get when people come to check out that "What is that?"

This year we drove our '50 Super 6 from Phoenix, leaving the 21st of May for San Jose, Calif for the Western Regional meet then we went up to San Francisco and on to Iowa for 6 weeks to our daughters where we were in 2 car shows and took in several Cruise Ins. After that we went up and around the Great Lakes (we had to spend one night in the Hudson as there were no vacant motels) and up to Maine and that area and then down to Marlborough (sp) for the '08 National which was Great Fun. After that we went down the east coast a little bit and into Washington DC and then wandered our way back to Phoeinx by Aug 8 th. We were gone 2 1/2 months and from drive way to drive way we put 8,637 miles on the 'ole Hudson. We had a great time and the only problem is the fuel pump started leaking @ a day from home, but made it home before we had to replace it. That was the only mechanical problem we had in 3 long trips.

This year was the third trip in 3 years in our Super 6; 2006 we went @ 6,000 miles including the National in Kearney, '07 we drove her over 7,000 miles including the National in Auburn and this year trip - ofcourse including the National in Marlborough.

In three years we've driven our Super 6 in 44 states and hope to get S. Carolina and Florida this next year (the storms this summer scared us away from doing that) and in 2010 well get Oregon amd Washington State to complete all 48 states that we've driven our Super 6 in.

I wasn't worried about driving the Hudson coast to coast as we had totally rebuilt the car from the ground up over a 5 year period and the power train was rebuilt by Al Saffrahn, I was lucky enough to be able to watch and help him with that. Also traveling with the national HET Roster is a comfort as you are never far away from other Hudson people and they are always ready and willing to help another Hudson Nut anytime they need help.

Lets see how many Hudson we can get to the '09 National - It's a once in a life time experience - so some how lets get those Hudson to Pontiac!!!!

We know it can be done - whether it's a 150 mile trip or a 5,000 mile trip + you won't regret it. Start saving aluminum cans for gas money - a lot of our gas money was things like that - We spent @ $2,150 for gas and believe it or not over 2/3's of it came from cans, saving loose change, instead of getting b-day, etc presents - asking for "Hudson Bucks" for the work on the Hudson and travel money. All of our family and friends really supported us on that. They all enjoy the Hudson as much as we do.

Geeze I went on to much - Sorry about that! Just remember there is always a way to figure out how to drive that GREAT HUDSON to the 100th Anniversary of our great Hudson Automobiles!!

You all have a Hudsonly Great Day

Yup, Gail and I plan to put some more miles on the Commadore enroute to Pontiac as we did to Marleboro. The Odo just turned 36K. Fixing up some odds and ends (and some odds don't have any ends) this winter.

I will definitely be driving my 38 Hudson Terraplane (modified) from Utah to Detroit. My plan is to try and hit some minor league baseball games on the way.

If possible, I will contact the home team and see if I can park the Hudson in front of the stadium for some publicity. With the centennial logo on the car, it should attract some attention!

I would enclose a picture, but I cannot figure out how to do that.

    Take care everybody!

My car is hardly a "trailer queen," but that's how I intend to get it there. :D

I intend to pull a trailer with my Hudson and carry my brand X on it. Today the computer failed on my one year old car today so I do not trust it on long trips LOL

Not sure how many Aussie's are coming to the BIG event, the figure jumps around a bit at the moment because of the shrinking Dollar, but at a guess maybe 30 or 40 would not be out of the question. All looking forward to it, making new friends and catching up with friends we have made both here and there when we were in Nashville a few years ago.

Walt and Margaret will be there by way of San Francisco to Goshen, CT. This is only a 3,300 mile trip. From there we head to Canada to travel to Pontiac, MI. Leaving there we will spend time in Forth Wayne, IN. From there we will travel route 90 with many stops along the way and end up in Washington state. Then hit route five (5) south, back to San Francisco and home. I do not travel in caravans because I like to travel in the 80 to 90 range, many people can tell you that. Hudson now shows 118,538 miles in ten (10) years and this trip should add another 11 to 13 thousand mile. Walt' Garage.

Few things move as fast as a Hudson caravan in my experience. Perhaps that's why you don't see them often. Anyhow as stated above there's no, more roadable vintage cars out there. You can get some tuneup parts through your local NAPA. Radial tires do make a difference. I'll drive mine even if it's in poor shape, if I can get it within 200 miles of Pontiac, AAA can do the rest! Then I'lll fix it when I get there. LOL.

I'll be there for the central regional on the 12th but if anyone is en-route and having trouble and needs a hand, or wants to travel up there with some Chi-Mil guys on that date. Feel free to contact. Then let's break some records and turn heads all over America on our way there!

Two of us are pulling trailers from San Diego to Pontiac for the meet. And not car trailers - trailer trailers! An Airstream and a Deville. A lower route on the way out, and up through Canada and some of the great western National Parks on the way back.

I've only been to one National before (Reno) and I'm way to excited... Can't wait to see all the cars and LEARN LEARN LEARN!

I'll second Aaron on the speed of Hudson caravans. Went to the "Grand Closing" of MacDonald Motors in Seattle about 10 years ago- MacDonald had been a Hudson dealer, still had lots of parts, was selling the building to the motorcycle outfit next door and wanted to give the Hudson folks one last chance at the parts inventory. The NW Chapter of HET met up at a rest area near Tacoma, and "caravanned" to Seattle. I was driving a '68 Mercedes diesel that got 60 MPH with a tail wind, and as soon as we got started, all those Hudsons jumped into the left lane and were GONE. I had lost sight of them within a couple of miles, and they were already having coffee and donuts when I arrived.

Note to self- no chapter road runs until I get my OD fixed. . .

Be sure to take pictures with the trailers in tow!

I am not prepared to take a 2,000 mile trip with a 4 and 7 year old in the suv, even with movie monitors on the head rests. We plan on arriving in an airworthy Jetliner.

Mike, missed you at the February dinner. I even drug my husband along this time.
