Fairlane transmission
-
I am trying to swap the original 2 speed tranny out of my 1959 fairlane galaxy 500, for a 3 speed. I tried a c6, but it didn't fit. Is there some kind of conversion kit, or another type of transmission I should use instead? This is my first classic car, so I am new to this stuff. Thanks.

what motor ??
-
Sorry, I forgot to list the motor. Its a 312.
-
i put a 289 in front of a 2 speed in a 56 convertable . that was a strong trans --
why are you changeing the trans --
you could -put a 352 or 390 and c6--
nascar raced that 312 built up to over 400 hp--in front of a 4 speed -
The 2 speed was slipping after I put a 4 barrel on her, and I thought I could get better performance out of a 3 speed.
-
did you adjust the bands??--theres an adjustment nut on the outside of the case-- -use an inch pound tourque wrench-- -i cant remember what the adjustment is -you will have to look it up--
to answer your question -- i dont remember the yblock haveing a 3 speed --sorry -
thanks. I will just try the adjustment for now and see how that works.

General question for edification................... so you're saying that if I have a 1956 Ford Customline with a 272 and automatic tranny that it is 2 speed? ha, I never tried hard to listen to the engine speed, or watch for shifts, but I have often wondered. Yes, I'm presuming that it is all factory stuff and unmodified.
thx,

i was wrong --it is a 3 speed trans -- but it was called a 2 speed because it started out in second gear -unless you pulled it down into first--
good info on this link-
and it has the adjustments also--
