This car was bought in 65 by my grandmother and passed down to me. The car has never been rebuilt fully original with 100,000 + or - a few miles not sure. Has 289/271 hp. was originally 3speed on the the colum now automatic 3 speed.
First of all, i am a mechanic been that way since i was 5. but i am a mopar man. never worked on fords. I was driving it one day when the oil light came on and i heard a banging noise which sounded to me no oil in the engine is cerculating so i turned off the engine. Just to be sure i pulled the oil filter and found it to be bone dry.
A few months ago i put a edlbrock performer series intake manafold with edlebrock 4b carb 600cfm on it cause the original carb was crapping out and intake was crap. the car ran wonderfully till the oil pump went.
My question is should i do a full rebuild or just replace the pump?
Keep in mind that i didnt say is that this car runs like a dream, if im not paying attention the needle will be barried past the 120 mph gauge. i have no idea how fast i have gone since the gauge only reads 120mph. But this car huals ass.
Please give m,e ideas.
Thx -
first of all --any one that drives 125 on public roads -is an idiot
second -if you dont know the differance of rebuilding or not after hearing your engine knock from lack of oil
look if you heard it knocking -it needs a full rebuild all machine work done and hot tanked -- then rebuild -re do the heads at the same time --all new parts--
now about this being a mech since you were 5--??????????? what in hell did you work on a tricycle -- -
I'd get the oil pressure back and see what happens.

Ron - when he pulls the pan to put a new pump on -id pull a couple rod caps and at least the center main to check bearings -- he posted the car has 100 K miles on it -- its worn out --

Good advice Rich. As long as he's that far it would be a good thing to take advantage of it.
Thanks for the tip.

I am stationed in Germany and its not uncommon to be doing 140mph on the autobahn. I just had a simple Question since i have never messed with fords. Really i think fords are crap. Plus who cares about a 289 anyways no balls no power. 351 would be the way to go with a 6 speed manual trans. But like i said i dont care about fords. I was just wondering if i should just redo the oil pump and oil pump drive rod since they both were destroyed. Like i said this car runs like a dream and was well taken care of, really i dont think it ever went over 55mph till i got ahold of it. When i put the 4bbl on it this car it screams down the autobahn like it was new.
It took me all of an hour to do the whole job. And before you get all bent on how fast i did it. I removed the motor mounts and lifted the engine with a cherry picker till i had no more room from the tranni touching the fire wall. I had plenty of room to do the job. I did pull a few of the main caps and a few on the rod caps. The bearings looked really good which surprized me. The car is now a screamer once again. No rebuild needed. Plus i would rather spend my paycheck on a mopar. haha L8
