engine swap

am swapping 400 engine into a 1968 firebird from a 1972 Catalina. Have a set of 7J2 heads on it. Is there a difference in power steering gear box's. having trouble fitting 72 motor around 68 gear box. olroadhog

The problem isn't with the gear box, its with the exhaust manifold. Years ago i had the same problem with a 1967 Firebird, i removed a bad 326 from the firebird and slipped in a 350 from a 1968 Le-Mans and the left manifold hit on the gear box, it wouldn't let me tighten down the motor mount. Easy fix for me at the time, i just used the 326 manifold. I dont know if you have that option or not. Other than that i don't know what more to tell you at this time.

I'm surprised you haven't ran in to other issues, the pre 70 400's had a different motormount hookup too. I put a 70 400 in my 55 Pontiac and of course had to do some major mods to get it to work. but now I have to assure I go post 70 if I ever replace it because I used 78 Firebird motor mounts for the sides. Anway that is what I was told.
Good luck with your conversion I know they can be a pain
