Question about Stolen 1956 Chev

Hi! If this question is in the wrong category, feel free to move it. If needed I can tell you folks the long story, but I guess it's best to keep it simple, or try. Basically, I'm at the end of my options and you are my last hope...I think. My father who is still alive and very well, thank you, bought a 1956 Chev 2dr post Crocus yellow/black with the power pack and other nice options from a dealer in Neillsville, Wi. in 1956. He was living in Prescott Wi. and in 1968 his mother borrowed the car for her annual trip to California. Well, again to make this story shorter, while she was in Long beach, Ca. somebody stole the car. A police report was taken but the car was never gotten back. My dad at the time could not do anything about it, and no insurance was involved...anyway. I'm trying to find the car for him. I have no Vin # (no, it was not on the police record) to work with and I have tried Ca. DMV, WI. DMV, The original dealer and even contacted State Farm insurance who he has always been insured with. The car of course could have been crushed, but it could still be on the road. So my question, does anyone have any ideas how to find the vin# of this car. If found, even as junk he wants it back even if it cost $$$. I have heard that there is a new service for $45 or so, if you have a vin # that present info can be found about the present owner...and the california Police would help. Any ideas? Thanks! Jon

Without a VIN, you are likely SOL. Unless you happen to have old registrations, an old title, or other proof with a vehicle number on it, and considering how difficult it is these days, post-9/11, to get info like that through states, you don't have much chance of success. Not what you want to hear, but that's facts.

Yes, your probably correct, but any ideas would help. If I had been trying this about 2 years ago I would have been successful as State Farm just "purged" their files before 1970 a couple of years ago. I might be at a dead end, but it's at least asking questions might help...The California Police will not progress without proof of his ownership and a vin # of course...Thanks! Jon
