My 70 Chevelle w/ 396 falls on its face when hot
-
I have a 70' Chevelle w/ a 396. It runs great cold but when it gets hot the engine bogs down when i'm taking off the line. What suggestions can ya'll give me? I just installed electric fans along with my belt driven fan so it's really not getting too hot 194 was my reading when I did it yesterday and it bogged down. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Chris

Sounds a lot like it's vapor-locking. Check your fuel line routing, and make as much of it metal as you can, minimizing the rubber line."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..." -
Another thing could be that when the car is cold, the choke is on and giving the engine a richer mixture. When it gets fully warmed up, the choke is off and the carb will not be as rich. SO, maybe you have a vacumm leak. When the choke is off, the mixture is lean to begin with and then add a vacumm leak and it doesn't want to accelerate. You may also have a bad accelerator pump. When the choke is on and the throttle is held open due to the fast idle cam being on, the main metering system is active and feeding the engine. When the carb goes to normal idle, all you have is the idle circuit, transition ports and the accelerator pump.
