Hydra-Matic Transmission slips

Hi All. I recently inherited a 1966 Ford Custom. It has the 289 V8 and hydra matic auto trans. When I shift from P to R it slips off, so to get it into Reverse, you have to put it into drive, then into reverse to get it to go in reverse. I know it sounds complicated. Basically before i back up, i have to throw it in drive then in reverse. Any suggestions would be welcome as to why this is happening.
