Would Gas Prices stop you in 2009
-
I was just wondering that since the 2009 100 year Hudson anniversary National would likely shape up to be one of the biggest Nationals ever, if an outside variable could possibly ruin that. So with this in mind I was wondering how gas prices might effect attendance at our 100 yr Hudson party even though it's a once in a lifetime thing? Academic curiosity.
-
It all depends if someone actually takes the time to think the price difference through. Let's say that the average gas price in summer 2007 was $2.75 and that your Hudson gets 15mpg. That gets you a cost of 18.4 cents per mile - on a 1000 mile round trip thats $184.00. If fuel prices settle in at around $4.50 for next summer, that will cost 30 cents a mile or $300 round trip for a 1000 mile journey.
I think that most HET'ers will will have the means to spend the extra $116 bucks to drive their Hudsons to Detroit in 2009. -
I seriously doubt I'll be there. I'd like to go, but with high fuel prices, both driving and flying are expensive propostions these days. Six bucks will be a reality by then, and I'm not going to play the game. I'm staying local for probably a long time to come.
Yeah, I'm probably a cheap bastard, but that is the way it is."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..." -
After thinking about this more, I assumed we were talking about people driving their Hudsons home to Detroit, but there are a fair amount of people who trailer their Hudsons to meets. I think we might lose quite a few of the trailered Hudsons. The price of the new government mandated diesel is through the roof, with no end in sight. When you're talking about 7mpg with a 1 ton truck and fuel that costs $1.00 more per gallon than gasoline, the folks might leave the antiques and convertibles at home. I hope not...
Maybe everyone needs to drive Jets! -
I get 17 with my Diesel pickup pulling a car on an open hauler ('96 3500 Cummins Dodge). If someone is getting seven with any Diesel PU and an loaded open hauler, they have serious problems! Seven with a gas truck? Yeah, I can see that!. Diesel PU's typical get DOUBLE the mileage of their gas brethren! And the Diesel is cheaper overall to drive the same distance than the gas truck, even if the price difference is $1.50 a gallon by then!
You don't own a Diesel pickup, do ya?"The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,

My goal is to make it. But I think I have a Boy Scout trip the same week to Florida and my wife will be returning from "the war" at about the same time.

No, but I do have a diesel Isuzu box truck.
Thanks for the correction, now there's no excuse for folks to stay home with their Hudsons. -
Still won't be there, but thanks, anyway!"The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,

Nope, the Ford Super Duty trucks are lucky to be getting ten mpg without a load. Even my 97 Ford diesel only got twelve, my 92 Cummins one ton got 17 pulling a horse trailer. I need to get it back on the road. I won't be going to the Nationals unless something drastic changes in my work. My Hash isn't getting very good mileage right now. I think it's running rich, I need to pull the plugs and get a look at them. It does seem to be running good though except for that.

No one in HET that I know cares if it's a show car or needs to be restored still. We'd be happy just to see ya there Ron!
-
You're right about that! Biggest National ever I head was in indianapolis, had about 500 Hudson's there. I hope the 100 yr National will be bigger than that.

I'll Be There Not Sure What I'll Be Driving Or Towing But 'baby' The 34 Sedan Or The 57 Hardtop Will Be There Count Me And My Family In All 9 Of Us I'M NOT PLANNING ON GAS PRICES CHANGE MY WAY OF LIFE I'VE BEEN GOING TO HUDSON MEETS 38 YEARS I'M TO OLD TO CHANGE MY WAYS NOW
-
HET'ers are a mix from millionaires to people scraping by on SS checks . The cost of fuel has raised the cost of everything and for lots of folks paying the bills and buying food for the table has become a big problem. You bet it's gonna hurt, Detroit is'nt that far for me but it's knocked me out much as I'd like to go, other things come first. Bud

Just the thought of spending a couple of grand to vacation in Detroit really doesn't trip my trigger, Hudsons or not. With two kids in school and everything (not just fuel!!!) going up, I've got higher priorities, quite frankly.
Did Wichita and Reno, one with a Hudson and one without.
Enjoy!"The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,

Money is for sure #1 in our lifes besides familey and friends. I for 1 has saved money for stuff like this in my old age of 57 and want to do what i want. For sure could not afford to buy a Duesenburg and keep it up but know my limits. Broke Ron but happy Ron

Work and the reality of life tend to get into my way when I plan for these trips, however, I have a few frequent flyer miles left and I can not think of a better way to spend them. I'd love to bring my car. One is not finished-and will not be in time and the other is like all the other 52 4-doors out there with funny paint; but who knows, by then I might just bite the bullet as they say and bring it along.Brownie

I wish my Hash got 17 mpg.
