Rebuilt Ultramatic OK?
-
I've heard all kinds of terrible things about the Ultramatics in the 55-56s. I'm considering buying a '55 patrician. The owner says that he shipped the transmission off to a professional Packard mechanic in Nevada, and he rebuilt it. Is it good to go, or will I be having problems with it?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. -
There is nothing wrong with the Packard Ultramatic. It was the smoothest shifting automatic transmission in the '50's. There are a few things you must be aware of. The transmission oil cooler is junk. It is mounted on the radiator hose, where there is no air circulation. The hot coolent actually heats it up ! These transmissions should not be overheated, or they will fail! I have a transmission oil cooler in front of my radiator.-works great ! Driving it over 36 years, and still shifts, and runs perfect! Also ,it was built for smoothness, not speed. It was built for a luxury car, not a race car. People used to floor it in low, then put it in drive at 60 mph, which made it much faster. But it quickly ruined the transmission ! Also, the fluid must be changed more often than the hydramatic, and other makes of automatic transmissions. The fluid should be kept clean. I love mine, and wouldn't trade it for anything else! As long as the person who rebuilt
your transmission knew what he was doing with the Packard Ultramatic transmission, you will have no problems, and 50 more years of smooth driving ! Just follow the advice given on how to take care of it. -
I would also recommend using Ford Type F fluid in it, as it shifts so much better with it. I use B&M TrickShift in my '56 Patrician that has a '55 Ultra in it and it shifts great. This is after sitting for 41 years in a field. All I've done is change the fluid several times and clean out the screen in the trans. They're really good transmissions, no matter what anyone says.
