Worm Gear for 1940 Plymouth
-
Hello:
I just got a 1940 Plymouth. It runs great! But, I have about 8 cm of play in the steering wheel. I foundly found someone who could diagnose it. He tells me I need a worm gear. Does anyone know where I can find this part. I would really like to enjoy the car before it gets too hot! I live in the south...

Kevin, Not real sure about this so check it out. I have a complete steering in a 40 Desoto coupe which may be the same part. Also at the minute not sure how good it is. Have a few other parts on the Desoto also . Will go to the farm {about 40 mile round trip |
} and see how good if it will work for you. Send me an email to BudHolmesViolins@Verizon.net -
Before you go to the trouble of replacing the steering box, have you consulted the shop manual to see if there is an adjustment? Might be as simple as that.
As to finding Plywouth parts, have you looked through Hemmings.com under Chrysler Corp. or Plymouth parts, to see if a new one might be for sale? Also, if you are not yet a member of the club serving your marque (Plymouth Club?) you might want to join. A club is a great clearinghouse for tech and parts information.
