Holly 4 barrel
-
I am getting ready to put a Holly 4 barrel on my '56 272, bone stock. Has a manual 3 speed and 3:78 gears. Holly recommends a 570 CFM. I was thinking of a 390 or 450. Seems the 450 is for dual 4 barrels and doesn't have a choke. The 390 is more expensive than some. On my 2 barrel now the linkage goes to the right side of the carb and pull back at the bottom of the linkage. Does any 4 barrels work that way and if not other than riggin' something from the right side what's the options? I want a brand new carb out of the box, no messing with it. Plug & play! Thanks ..

Thanks to this forum for nothing. It is almost as useless as the Pontiac forum. I finally heated the existing linkage with a MAP torch and bent it in a U and then when on the other side of the carb heated it again and bent it straight up. Once up cut it off and then ground down both sides and drilled a hole through it. With two bearing rod ends from Grainger and a piece of threaded stock I made the linkage to go to the driver side of a brand new Holley 390 carb. Works fine although had to drill a hole in the carb linkage to get the right travel. Works fine, looks fine .. Hope this may help someone else.

it very well could be that no one else has had your problem --so they didnt post -- --

What? So nobody's got an opinion on what carb to use? On the Y-block forever forum there would be tons of opinions. And on the H.A.M.B. there are more posts in 5 minutes than there is on here in a week .. I just tried to generate a little conversation on an otherwise useless forum ... Thanks for the response, at least you and I are here ...

I'm begining to agree with you ejstith. When i first found this web site i was thrilled. I've got three cars that i sometimes need help with, a 1967 firebird 400 sport convertible, a 1969 mustang convertible, and a 1978 cougar xr7. But after posting a coulpe of different questions about problems i was having, i either did NOT get any response or nothing usable. Apparently my cars aren't old enough to qualify for this site. What is H.A.M.B.??
Thanks, Phil -
This forum sucks, not a person on here with balls enough to even reply to my last post.

seems -the org poster ask a question --seems a poster came on and told him how to do a fix-- what in hell more do you want posted -how to change his underware--
if you have a question pretaining to fords --post it and stop the childish bull **** - -
Maybe you should actually read the posts before you jump in and reply, Rich. Seems the original poster did ask a question about his car and NOT ONE person took the time to answer his question(even you) until after he found his own solution, NOBODY "came on" with a solution. I've asked questions on this forum about my vehicle and i so far have gotten the same treatment. As far as the underware change goes, i wouldn't expect anybody to have any advice on that either.

i looked real hard and didnt see where you tried to answer his question . as a mech -i didnt have an answer for him so i didnt post --but if you look at the other threads you will see more answers from me than any one here--
if you gona ***** --step up to the plate and offer some advise -
Amen Rich, tell it like it is.

Well im new, but ****.... I'll give you my opinion since I've been working on cars for 28 yrs now.... I would go with an Edelbrock, that is what I put on my 59 Dodge.... I used the 1406.... electric choke... 600 cfm's If your looking for a plug and play this is the carb. Works fine. -

Phil.
I answered his question. I had the same problem and I posted what I did to fix it. Give me your email and I'll send pictures of how it was done. In the end it worked out very good and looks pretty good too. I used a Holley 390 right out of the box and it works fine. Had to drill another hole in the linkage but other than that was bolt on. After I got it bent I ground the sides flat and drilled a hole through it and put a 10/32 stainless bolt through it with a stainless lock nut on both ends.

The poster that had the fix was the same poster that had the original question. The original poster finally gave up on a fix here and fixed it on his own .. The info supplied by the fix post was just info for somebody else that may have this same problem .. -

Thanks for the opinion about the carb but on a 2bbl 272 the real problem is the linkage. On the 2bbl it goes to the passenger side and the 4bbl goes to the driver side. I got a 4bbl linkage but I didn't like it's set up so I just bent my 2bbl linkage over to the driver side ... worked great, but of course if one ever wanted to put a 2bbl back on it would have to get the original 2bbl linkage because the modified one won't work any more .. -
ej how did you connect the electric choke on your 390 Holley?
Scott:confused: -
Everybody says not to but I hooked my + wire to the coil. Some say the coil doesn't make 12V all of the time. Mine does. Seems to work OK for me. Just hooked the - wire to a ground on the firewall. I guess I could have ran a wire to the selenoid but I didn't.
