Oil pressure on small block 350 chevy engine
-
Is there anyone that logs onto this message board that can tell me if and how the oil pressure can be INCREASED on a 350 small block chevy engine, my e-mail is:bjharris@mynewroads.com
thanks,
bill -
You can use a high volume pump to get more oil flowing - but the pressure will always be controlled by 1 thing - bearing/journal clearances.
If you are experiencing consistent low oil pressure (and you're sure it's not the sending unit) this is probably the problem.
Now that being said - I had a 258 AMC Jeep motor that when I bought the thing it would show about 5lbs of oil pressure warm at an idle - kinda scary - I replaced the oil pump with a high volume one - didn't change a thing.
I drove that CJ for 5 years with no engine problems at all other than low oil pressure at an idle.
What is your pressure for what you are working with? -
I have about 8-12 pounds at Idle with engine hot, i have about 20-25 going down the road at the legal speed limit
-
That is somewhat low - but not too bad. I would expect this out of an older engine or one that only had a partial rebuild.
Are you experiencing any problems, knocking noises? Is this a new or newer motor?
What type and viscosity of oil are you running? -
IF YOU WANT TO INCREASE OIL PRESSURE ON ANY ENGINE WITH AN OIL PUMP,YOU SIMPLY MUST REPLACE THE STOCK SPRING IN THE OIL PRESSURE
RELEIF VALVE, LOCATED INSIDE THE OIL PUMP.A HEAVIER SPRING WILL PRODUCE AS MUCH PRESSURE UNTIL THE SPRING RETRACTS AND ALLOWS BYPASS.(HYPOTHETICALLY)IF YOU ACTUALLY BLOCKED THAT RELEIF HOLE W/ A SCREW...... YOU COULD HAVE OIL SPRAYING OUT FROM GASKETS AND PCV
LINES ,AND YOUR REAR MAIN SEAL:mad: . IN REALITY YOU SHOULD RUN AN ENGINE AT PROPER PSI AND REPLACE WORN PUMP. BEARING PROBLEMS.JUNK IT -
I think maybe you need to outline the probem, what is your oil pressure now. You can have TOO MUCH pressure also Other than that low pressure is caused by wear on bearings, bad pump, gauge/sending unit not accurate
-
10 pounds per 1,000 rpm is the rule. If you have that on a street motor
you should be in the safe zone. As said above bearing clearance is the key
issue.
Question for you. What position should the weight be in on the heat riser of a 1955 small block Chevy 265? Vertical when cold or horizontal?
