Need help with my flattie
-
I've got a 47 Merc. W/a stock 59A motor. Car was sitting for a good 2+ years before I drug it home. Got it running and now have a problem getting it restartred after it has run for a few minutes. Act's like the timing is too far advanced (ie. slow cranks).
Starter, generator, carb, all rebuilt...
I put a new condensor on it (The only one I had was from a SBC) to get it to start. Could this be the problem (because it's not for 6V)??
Looking for a little help or where to go next....

I would start with connections and battery condition. Everything must be clean and tight, battery in good condition and the correct size cables on battery.

Battery is new...as far as cables go, they look in good shape and are tight on the solenoid, battery, and ground....

It's amazing how many times I have come across cables that "looked" good and found out that there was enough corrosion there to stop the current.
Does it start again after the car has sat for a while? If it cranks fine when it's cold then you will need to remove the starter and have it tested by a reputable place.

Also make sure you have 6volt cables, they're twice the size of 12 volt units, about as big around as your thumb. Make sure ALL connections are clean; studs on starter, and solenoid, where ground strap bolts, any additional ground straps between engine and firewall or frame, and especially the cables themselves.

On my 49 Ford, My electronic ignition just went out and I'll be damned if the coil is good unless I was sold a dud, the pertronix (can be dubious) seems good from a test http://www.ttalk.info/Tech/PerPosGndTest.htm and the wiring seems all good too, voltage where it should be; Power from Ignition, Good Ground.
I'm stumped. Any help would be appreciated cos otherwise my wife has to take me work again today
