New Tools III: Geared Engine Stand

These days when buying tools you really have to consider shipping in the equation vs. buying locally etc.

I was in need of a new engine stand as all I had one of the cheapo tripod style engine stands that work ok (if you don't have to move or turn the motor over :p ) that I bought some 20+ years ago

I had the 454 on the tripod and it was scary trying to do anything and I ended up dumping the motor over when I moved

Now - somehow the top has vanished (due to loaning out tools) so I said the heck with it time to step up and get a new one.

I was looking at 4wheeled HF 1000lb+ stands for around 110.00 - and thought why not see what a geared engine stand costs..HF doesn't sell one.

I checked Northern Tool, Eastwood, etc. Most stocked a Sunex model for approx 250.00 but the kicker was shipping was 150+

I checked Sears, their lowest priced geared engine stand was $1700.00

Then I located an ATD model online, called a local distributor and they told me that they sold to NAPA, Shucks, Autozone etc.

So I looked up NAPA online and they have their signature brand lifting equipement and a 1000lb geared engine stand for 250.00 online.

I called my local NAPA store and asked the price and availability - 199.00 (on sale right now) and it was in the warehouse - instant satisfaction!

SOLD! 90.00 more than the HF model but with the worm drive. Priceless!:D

I didn't know such a thing existed. Guess that shows what a bottomfeeder I am when it comes to tools! I especially enjoy my ancient tripod model when I need to clamp the engine in an "off balance" position, so I'm trying to hold the engine with one hand and a knee or hip, while reaching up and trying to tighten the stupid "set nut" with the other, only to discover, oops, not quite tight enough! and so you start over. Looks like a nice piece- wish you lived closer ;>)

Been there - done with that!

Small block motors, aren't too bad but drop a big block on ol' tripod and try turning it over...I just about tore my bicep again!

And then after dumping the 454 over on its side while moving into the shop mounted on the ol' tripod stand - I vowed the next time I needed an engine stand to buy one of the 4 legged variety (Rambo likes those better too :p)

The only reason I thought of a geared stand is that I am getting flippin' lazy in my old age. here's some examples...

    * Lawnmower - better have electric start
    * Pressure Washer - better have electric start
    * Weed Eater - 4 stroke, can't stand mixing 2 strokes (if these had electric starters I'd get one too!)
    * Chainsaw - this ones ticking me off 'cause I still have a 2 stoke...why hasn't anyone made a production 4 stroke saw yet?

Anyway, I digress... I have seen large setups in diesel shops that cost several thousand dollars but can hold a semi-motor and transmission and figured someone must make a smaller version and started looking around.

I think if one were industrious enough you could build one with a gear reduction setup from a tranmission or pto perhaps?

I saw a couple of home-built units on CraigsList locally here in washington but they were "Franken-Standish" looking and/or made for something much larger than I'll ever work on - and they wanted the same price or more than the one I bought.

BTW - you're more than welcome to come by anytime you're in the area.

I was hoping to come up last summer, but got embroiled in a horse barn remodeling project that took on "a life of its own"- just getting that finished up now, so hope to have some free time. The remaining problem is the overdrive not working at present- but I have the parts to fix, so hope to get it going. I think I have 4.11 gears, or thereabouts, so long trips are kind of a drag.

I'm not sure why this was closed? Maybe it was inadvertant by another CC Admin?

I started this thread because I thought other forum members might like to know about a nice stand, with a gear drive at a reasonable price - and that it might be worth discussing?

I re-opened this thread because unless - someone corrects me - I think this is a perfectly valid disucssion in the "discussions area", since MANY many forum members work on their own Hudson/Custom engines.

Maybe someone is just mad I got some new tools lately?
The one with the most toys wins....;);)
