HI, new here & a Q - 57 Chevrolet wagon-gas tank removal

    Hi,

My name is Jack-57ChevyWagon. I am new here and have a question about my 1957 Chevrolet 210 Townsman 6 passenger station wagon.

Before I acquired this car, it had been garaged for at least 20 years in the US east coast climate. The car now resides with me on the west coast in CA, when I put some gas in the tank, I found there were a few leaks so the tank was immediately drained, filler tube, straps and sending unit removed. The cold weather and 51 years must have rusted the inside of the tank, so it's time to replace it.

My question is: The tank will not slide down past the differential and I wanted to know if there is something I am doing right. I have tried everything possible, there is a spare tire area, but it is part of the body and can't be removed. It seems to be a easy but tricky removel for me.

In all my years of working in auto wrecking yards and dismantling cars, this is a first for me, so I am asking for any help/advice in this matter. Let me know, it would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jack-57CW

Well, I tried raising the body from another angle and let the suspension hang down a little more, sure enough, it gave the room for the gas tank to slide past the under body tire conpartment and differential.

Problem solved, just had to sleep on it. :D

    Have a great one,
