I believe the cookie ticket said something like...

"Good things come in small packages, expect yours to arrive today"

Driving home today with the big Dually I hit a pretty good rain sqaull - so I slowed from 65 to 50 coming up on this squall and a freeway off-ramp where traffic always backs up.

I'm in the fast lane with at least 10 car lengths in front of me - ie. no one - when out of my peripheral vision I saw 2-cars hit each other just ahead to the right - so I let off the throttle, and sure enough the guy in the center lane with a truck/camper- horse trailer (loaded) pulls directly into my lane NOTE: at this point he is already involved in the accident, but pulls in my lane anyway?

I have no where to go at 50mph but down the median and right into the cable barrier, where I took out 2 stantions and came to rest with both axles buried in the mud.

I got out - looked at the truck, got back in and started it up, put it in 4 low and drove right out of the muck.

Although, I hit no cars and I was not the cause of the accident I went ahead and waited for the State patrol - I didn't need someone clamining it was my fault because they "saw me drive off" after sliding down in the median.

So far the only cosmetic damage to the truck is a ding in the front bumper, a couple of scratches in the front fender flare from the cables and it broke the center cap off my right front wheel.

I already dropped the truck at the shop because the steering wheel was out of alignment - most likely a bent tie-rod as it tracked straight down the highway at 60mph, with no shaking, pulling or other problems than the wheel position after the "incident"

So I think I'll come out of this with less than a 500.00 bill and my truck intact ~ then maybe I'll see if I can get my money back, but I'm just glad I came out of it virtually unscathed compared to what could have happened.

Thanks all - I feel blessed, things could have been much worse, there were no injuries to any parties that I know of.

Although I'm out money and the inconvienence ~ it was the young couple who started the chain-reaction that were actually the ones I felt the most compassion for...they were trying to get to Tacoma (30 miles away) to the hospital to sign paperwork to get their baby airlifted to Seattle.

I think when they got next to the guy towing the truck/camper/horse trailer and couldn't see because of the rain and road spray (of course their mistake was not slowing down for the driving conditions)

Their car was a complete total and then knowing their child was waiting on them must have been awful.

The SP did the right thing by taking them immediately to Tacoma with the lights going, but I still feel for that couple ~ as they must be wondering ~ what could get worse for them right now?
