Saftey-Kleen rant!
-
Since I am looking for a decent parts washer, it always hits a sore spot for me I need to rant about! Maybe I'm in the wrong...but here's my story...
Some 13 years ago I was working on an intake manifold replacement on a truck I owned so I asked my grandfather if I could borrow the parts washer he had in his garage for oh..I don't know about 10-15 years.
So as I'm hauling the thing home, I stopped by the local auto parts store to pickup 15 gallons of solvent. The parts store was right next to my buddies bodyshop so I went inside the bodyshop first to say hello.
When I came out, 2 guys in suits came out from the parts store and started asking me questions about the parts washer in the back of my truck.
IT seems (or I was lied to by these SK employees) at the time that Safety Kleen only leased their equipment and you couldn't "own" one and since the parts washer was "legally" theirs that they were going to take it or call the police. I'll note here...they did point out a stamping in the back of the tub that said "Property of Safety Kleen..."
Today, I'd probably call them out on that and get the Police involved - because I can garuntee my grandpa didn't steal that parts washer...he might not have know about SK's policies, but he would never steal - it wasn't in his nature ~ but I was much younger then and didn't feel I had any fallback given the stamping on the unit, the credentials I was presented that these dirt-bags actually worked for SK.
I was so PO'd at myself for not just taking the unit home first since it was a 50/50 choice to stop by the parts store on the way home or after I dropped the parts washer off...
I was so ashamed of myself~ I never told my grandpa I lost his parts washe because he had gotten very sick, and died 6 months after and I could never bring myself to tell him.
So now I'm looking around for a good parts washer...just for the heck of It I looked on SK's website...they now sell their parts washers to the masses :mad:
So, I tell this story to try to put a little dent in SK's corporate karma for having policies at the time that took my grandpas parts washer from me, to now where their cheapened products to a point they are sold to the masses.
SK will never see a penny of my money.
List of Companies I won't do business with...
* Safety Kleen
* Verizon
Rant done...climbing off Soap Box! -
I have no experience with Safety Kleen, but we had purchased a Zep parts washer at a shop I used to work at. I think it was about 1K, but had really good filtering and a large tub. You only had two change the fluid every few months.
As long as you get one with some good filters, I think brand doesn't matter much. -

Basically I was sold (and installed) internet services where they couldn't deliver the speeds I was promised this then ended up costing me several thousand dollars more to launch a website a few years back through delays and reconfiguring accounts and servers.
What's the old saying...Burn me once, shame on you - burn me twice, shame on me

I bought a vapor degreaser off ebay like the one lessed here for $125. Vapor Degreaser It is be best thing I have ever used. They are on ebay all the time used or good prices. Just drop in the parts, flip the switch, leave for an hour, come back later....clean parts.

Cool - almost like having you own hot-tank ~ I did see a few of these but none in any decent shape close-by. Shipping these days makes a big difference in what to pay on auction - for sure.
Of course if I had "Leno" (unlimited) money I'd opt for an ultrasonic cleaner http://www.omegasonics.com/ -
In spite of the agressive and complete cleaning job these devices perform, it can also be lethal to the user who does not know the properties of the chemical vapors generated. Use of the cleaner with aluminum or Zinc can create a fire / explosion hazard which may result from violent chemical reactions between these metals and certain cleaners. Failure or reduced efficency of cooling coils will allow vaporized cleaner to escape into the users enviornment. The vapors can and have caused injury and death. Use great care when operating them.
Not trying to be an alarmist, just using some history with industrial versions of these cleaners to caution hobby users. -
If just for home garage use and not commercially, inexpensive Units are available from Speedway and work well. They have a full size Washer and a Drum Model. There are Services that Tent Tool Sale them at Malls etc thruout the Country, (maybe Harbor Freight too).....

Dan, if your parts are like mine, you need some serious stuff to break through all the hardened "gunk". I got a cheap washer, took off the pump, patched over the opening where the pump went, and filled it with 5 gallons of carb cleaner I got from NAPA. That stuff is great! But, I did move the washer just outside the shop, so I wouldn't be breathing those vapors.
