Dodge 880 restoration
-
i just turned 14 and i saved some moneys, so i got a complete 1964 dodge 880 for 50 bucks they dude parked in and left it in his yard. everything is there! all the crome and the glass is perfect ! seats were tore up a bit but i can get it fixed a few small dents then can be pulled out and im going to need help with this.
where do i start?
-
Get it running and stopping first. Get whatever mechanical problems might exist, fixed first! No sense in doing lots of interior work and body work if the engine or transmission is bad, and/or it won't stop!
VERY first thing is make sure you have good title to the car! Get it in your name and then get the car drivable. Running first, then stopping, then tires, THEN body, then interior last."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..." -
Well, my dad says to pull motor then mork on stuff wile fixing motor, kuz all that's rong with it is motor and tranny =[ it's a push button
-
Just a warning: don't try to do too many things at once! If it's really necessary to pull the engine to fix the problems, okay (often it isn't, though). But there are only so many hours in a day (especially when you're 14 and you have homework!) and you want to put them to good use!
Sure, if you get a "stopping point" on the engine (where you can't go any father until the UPS man delivers the parts you ordered), you can tinker with the interior and other non-essential stuff. But, hey! -- those brakes need checking out and you could do that instead. And they're critical to the operation of the vehicle!
When I was 14, as I recall, I didn't have a lot of patience! And if my folks had let me own a car (they didn't!) I would have wanted to get it on the road ASAP, and enjoy it. The more projects you start to work on, the more you have left to finish! And you don't want to have the car still sitting there immobile, when you get your driver's license! So just concentrate on the essential things first. There'll be plenty of time to fix up the rest of the car after you've got it running and driving around!
Anyway, that's the advice of an old fogey who was once 14. -
nah, im home schooled. my grandpa was a teacher for 40 years i only work about 1 hour a day, but me and my dad bought a chain hoist and we going to start unbolting from motor mounts, and im in arkansas, at 14 i get my learners permitt and at 15 i can drive alone
:D:D plus, this car will take a long time to restore.. here is pictures of Exuse the messy garage..[IMG]
i took the Seats carpet and buckles out, so i can get to rust in floor. i have set them over in corner of garage and bolts and screws in a holder. , it also has alot of rust dammage, but not going through in some spots.

Welcome to the group oldcarkid.
I give you credit for tackling such a project and wish you the best of luck.
I agree with Jon B. Running and stopping are the most important things and the rest is secondary.
The only other advice I will give you is, get yourself a service manual for the car. They are valuable when you get stumpted.

yeah, i got original papers service manual and stuff to car. and i will get it running and stopping first. and thanks for the luck, im going to need it :o -
Get it running before you yank the engine - it doesn't much make sense to pull it and then work on it, if it doesn't need work, does it? Once you determine it runs, or if it needs certain things, then pull it to completely detail the engine and the engine compartment, if you feel compelled that you absolutely must pull the engine and transmission.
Get it running. Then, get the brakes working properly. You already know where you stand on the body and the floors - this car is easily do-able and will make you a great project.
The rear brakes will require a drum puller, since this car has the old-style 8-3/4" rear axle with the castellated nut holding the drum on. Do NOT get overly-aggressive trying to get the rear drums off - take your time. The drums can be bought, but they are tough to find these days!!!
That push-button tranny is unique to Mopars up through 1965. In 1966, they went to a different means of shift linkage, and these transmissions are NOT interchangeable between 1965-earlier and the 1966-later cars!!!
Do NOT go stripping the car down to bare-bones right now, as I can just about guarantee that will be where your project stops, and you end up scrapping it of selling it for parts because you got discouraged"The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,

yeah, what the guy i bought it from said the tranny was going out and the motor Seased, so me and my dad are going to pull the motor and tranny and rebuild it all, and work on body and interior wile we work on the engine.
:D:D -
update: me and my dad have got all the stuff ready to pull motor. we are going to finish pulling it monday. we are going to put bucket seats for front seats, and the bench seat for the back. we are not going to use the push button transmission, we are going to put a 727 stick transmission yessss.
-
Do NOT chuck the original transmission, push-button shifter, cables, or the linkages on the transmission!!! Since you are going to a '66-newer TF tranny, you can run those parts on e-pay or any of the Chrysler forums. You'll definitely have a buyer for these parts!

You will also have to modify your driveshaft to accept a front yolk, rather than the trunnion it currently has."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
