Electrical problem

Working on a 73 Mustang. Turn the key on and the Alt light comes on as it should. The car will start and run but there is an arcing going on at the upper radiator support on the passenger side. If you turn the key on and watch the Alt light, turn the headlights on or step on the brake, the Alt light goes out and the car will not crank. The headlights will not light either. Any load on the electrical system while the key is in the on position will cause the power to go out and the car not to start. Re-cycling the ignition switch will eventually get the Alt light to come back on. There is a new battery in the car and new battery cables with clean and tight connections.

Bad fuseable link from the solenoid?

Also, any idea where I can get a wiring schematic for the convertible top?

    Thanks for any suggestions

You have a direct short in the headlight loom. Arcing would indicate that probably the loom has been rubbed raw where it goes through the core support. Fuseable link could be a problem but usually when they fail, they go out completely as they're supposed to. Also make sure that your power leads at the starter solenoid are clean and tight. It is possible for corrosion to occur between the leads and you will lose contact.
