narrowed rearend
-
my buddy has a 1955 bel air with a blown 454 and wants to do a rearend. was wondering if anyone knows of a rearend you can put in this car with 10 inch tires and not have to narrow it. has anyone tried or heard of anyone trying a bronco rearend or anyother narrow rearend in these cars. any suggestions? thanks for the help.

I have a 57 Belair 2dr sedan and moved the spring mounts to the inside of the frame rails for more tire clearance. I bought a 9 inch 67 Mustang locker rear end. the Mustang rear end is one inch narrower than the stock 57 rear end, brake backing plate to plate. This is a project car that I have been unable to work on for 4 years due to a growing family. There are also custom builders that advertise in Classic Chevy and will put together a 9 inch with the spring perch mounts where you need them and whatever gear you want, about 1000.00. I spent 950.00 which inc the rear end, new 4.11's, clutches and labor prior to builders advertising complete units. With this rear end I probably could have kept the springs in the original locations, however with the right wheel tire combination, I can fill up the wheel house. JN
