intake and heads
-
I hear something about ported heads? Lets say I "port my heads", what effect will this have in the performance of the engine, also what would this mean for the intake?
-
Porting the heads will give you a better flow around the valve pocket, therefore additional horsepower. There are several good books out there to learn how. Are you working with the 360,390 or 401? I'm not a big AMC guy but I'm sure somebody in the AMX club could help you with this. You should not have to do anything with the intake other than "gasket match" or bringing the runners out to the intake manifold gasket line. You will need to do the same on the heads as well.

In the old days one "ported" to eliminate rough spots in the generally crude sand cast iron castings of let's say post WWII. The gas was often crappy and rough side wall helped in increased turbulance which was a side benefit of cheap production methods. Porting provided an assending rate of benefits as modifications intensified with compression and carburation. Just porting alone without other mods is probably worth one percent, nearly impossible to detect.
Still the last time I went thru the '54 Hudson Hornet 308 spent at least 20 hrs and twice that many grinding stones cleaning up the passages, looking for that 1%.
