Need HELP: flywheel for a Mercury flathead 1CM 1951
-
Hi, i recently buy this Mercury( truck or car?) flathead engine 1CM 1951 in France (Le Mans town).
For my hot rod plan i want adapt a T5 manuel gearbox.
actually i try to find the flywheel, the bell housing & the clutch which are missed. but at the end of the crankshaft is fixed this metallic plate. I do not know for what it serves: belonged it to an automatic clutch of origin?
it can come out.
is what I can fix the flywheel directly on this clamp?
i join 4 pictures of my engine.
Can i adapt a 8BA Ford 40 - 48 or 49-53 on my engine (i think it must have 120 teeth?)
thanks in advance for your answer and to help me to find technical drawings or pictures of the original adaptation and for my future adaptation plan.
sincerelly.

HI JEAN, 1951 was the first year Ford used an automatic transmission. It was optional, you could get automatic or manual. The crankshaft ends were the same. From the pics someone has cut the plate that the torque converter for an automatic was bolted to. It is no longer of any use. You can use either a complete automatic setup or a manual clutch/transmission. For manual you will have to put a proper pilot bearing which is a drive in bronze bushing in the end of the crankshaft to fit the front shaft of the transmission. To avoid a lot of re-engineering/adapting and such I would try to find a bell houseing--flywheel--clutch and pressure plate--and transmission from any manual shift flathead. For floor shift any year will work with the only differance being that with a transmission from a column shift car you will have to use an aftermarket shifter unit for floor shift, or make up your own shift linkage to adapt to what ever column shift you would use. Any of the trannys you mentioned can be used.
