Engine Serial Number location - 308
-
Where is the engine serial number on a 53 Hornet? From an old thread, it seems that on a 49, the engine serial number is on the passenger side of the block behind the front edge but before the manifold. Is this the correct place to look? I am trying to determine if the engine is a 262 or a 308. The head is definitely from a 262 ( says 262 and Power Dome right on the head ). I do know that switching the head from a 262 onto a 308 was a popular engine hop up trick back in the day.
The body serial number is correct for a 53 Hornet. Once I find the engine serial number, how do I determine if it is a 262 or 308? The car has a dual range hydramatic transmission, I have heard that the Hornet with the dual range hydramatic came with a 308 - is this correct?
Any assistance would be much appreciated

As I recall the engine serial number is on the passenger side, front edge of the block.
If it's a 308 it has an extra strenthening rib down each side above the oil pan. 262's don't.
If I'm wrong somebody will correct me. LOL

Serial # as where Alex said. Unless it is a 55 or 56 engine then it is on the drivers side on top of the block. Serial # wont tell if 232 262 or 308 block as the engine # is the same as car # when left the factory. Lots of 262 heads have been put on the 308s. The 308 has a extry rib the length of block about 2 inches above the oil pan flange
