Flathead 6 & powerflite question
-
My 54 has a Powerflite bolted up to the Flat head 6. Would a 727 not bolt up to that motor? What would have to be changed?
-
Vulchr,
I am afraid the answer is no it does not bolt up. You have to make an adapter plate to use the different bolt patterns. I have been toying with the same problem for some time and have found out that Chrysler in some industrial application in the early sixties had a adapter plate and a 727 behind the flat heads in airport tugs.
I do not think it would be to hard to use a flat piece of AL. plate 1" thick. A person could rough cut this plate with a saber saw to shape and drill and tap bolt holes for the trany to bolt to. There is sites on the INTERNET that explain how to align the crank center to the trans input shaft center that sounds like a person could do this with out a lot of special tooling.
The biggest problem would be making a hub adapter for the crank to flex plate. The only way that I can figure this out is to have a machine shop fab one up. This would be the biggest cost unless some one new a good machinist or was one.
The nice thing about this is that a person has a choices of many auto trans that Chrysler has built. You could use a 904, 727, or the OD from a early Dakota. Check out this web site as they explain on how to use the OD trans conversion and pressure switches to shift in and out of OD. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/SwapInformation.htm
Also another good page is: http://www.50plymouth.com/
This person has one of the better looking flat heads. It makes a V8 look kind of bad.
Also I have a thread for a person that installed a 5 speed manual trans behind a flat head, if you would like it let me know as I am having a hard time finding it at the moment.
Good luck and have fun.

I agree with HFH, there have been some FH6 with TF spotted in industrial applications, problem is that the damned things don't wear out.
I have been collecting information for awhile now with regards to this very question because I had a desire to put a torqueflite behind a 6 in my Wayfarer, but as I collect more information many people tell me that they too need an adapter so as an extension of my Hemi Parts and adapters I have decided to make an adapter for the Torqueflite and for the Chrysler 4-speed. This package will use the small block 904, 727 or A-500 overdrive, or the small block manual bellhousing with a late style 130 tooth flywheel.
Feel free to call and check on the status of the project and hopefully something will be available soon to help you out.
