I've been looking for a particular color/optioned Chevrolet Crew Cab 4x4 Dually for quite some time - as the 1/2 ton 4x4 I've had for several years now just isn't "cutting the mustard" anymore. You can't really haul anything of substance without the headlight pointing to the trees!

And in the shorty there's no room for Rambo.

This morning about 3:00AM ~ I finally found one on CL out of Portland Oregon and drove down to look at it. It was a long day today 12hours + driving but I now have a "new" truck!

It's got some cosmetic problems with some typical Chevrolet paint peeling but I got it for just above wholesale costs and paid cash - no payments :D

So here's my new "Hudson Hauler" - Rambo has already claimed the backseat, just like the Hudsons!

1998 Chevrolet 4x4 Crew Cab 6.4L Turbo Diesel, AC, PM, PDL, PWD, PB, DUAL BATTERY, TOW PACKAGE, ALARM, CRUISE, TILT, Cassette and CD, alloy wheels.

Nice-looking little hauler there! It'll do the job - once you go Diesel, you never will want to tow with a gas pickup ever again!

Thanks all - I like these "older" style pickups because they still have steel bumpers and not all the plastic front ends.

The turbo diesel is certainly different to drive. It's not quick by any means but it pulls hard all the way through 80mph.

I can't wait to see what it tows like!

I'm taking my rollback trailer down to Portland on Saturday with the new truck to pick up my old truck and trailer it back, unless they find someone else to buy it!

I've been accumulating vehicles the last couple of years and now really need to drop a couple

    1949 Hudson Commodore
    1950 Hudson Super 6
1989 P30 GM Grumman Step Van
    1990 GM K1500 4x4
    1998 GM K3500 4x4 Crew Cab

Can we guess which 2 are going up for sale? :D

John - still working out getting the new truck setup to tow the trailer. I'm not entirely confident I'm going to be done wiring the new brake controller by Saturday.

My shop is completley full of 2 - 4dr Hudsons and all their parts and it's been raining everyday making it impossible to get anything outside so I can move the truck in.

Who's grand idea was that to buy that other Hudson...oh yeah - me :p

I LOVE this truck! I put a K-N filter on it today, here's the 6 new treads go on it tomorrow...Its a 4x4 and I care more about traction than hiway conditions...ok, they just look cooler!

I'm not feeling 98 chevy love today.... Went to start the Tahoe, and it didn't crank. Changed the battery, still nothing. My guess is the fuel pump, since I don't have that fuel pump sound, which is great, since I just filled up. I got to find a place to put 30 gallons of gas... I think the PT cruiser is going to get a lot of gas over the next week. I don't have time to change it, as of now. I hope to get a few minutes each day to work towards my goal. Also, goes hand in hand, my little guy is sick, and seems to be getting better, he was throwing up all over the place for two days.

Glad you got that beast, Dan. Looks like it will serve you well!

    BEst!

Sorry to hear the little one hasn't been feeling well - cars and trucks can always sit and wait.

Ummm. now back to the truck - did you pull the codes from the computer? That's the first thing I would do.

no, i'm sure it's a fuel pump. This baby cranks, no fuel pump sound, replaced a relay, just because they're cheap, and still no pump. Also, no gas smell, si it's not flooded. I need to siphon gas off now for a few days, I bet that's gonna be fun...

I could try to pull codes, but I think the fuel pump is the culprit. I went over to Automotive Forums and asked over there, everyone says fuel pump. Oh and no CEL, so, we'll see...

Yeah - I gotcha, I waited until last year to finally buy a code reader - I swore I'd never be without one again because I used it one time and it paid for itself!

But, alas - I loaned it to a friend, who has now gone through a divorce and haven't seen the tool in 6 months!

So, I gave it to him for a xmas present and bought myself a new scanner on ebay that has more functionality.

So much for the BigHorn tires, Les Scwhab started mounting the tires and felt that with the duallies in the back that the width on the lug would rub If I put a load on the truck, then tried to sell me a more expensive hi-way style tread they had in stock - only offering them for the same price when I balked.

I told them I appreciated their honesty in pointing out a potential problem - but felt that they should have known about these issues up front, the guy tried to give me some weak excuse they didn't know until they mounted them up...I just stated that they were in the tire business and should have the expertise and knowledge to avoid these problems.

So I told them to button it back up and I'd have to take my business elsewhere because I couldn't wait for them to order tires again.

To add insult to injury when I hopped in my truck I only got about 1/2 block before it felt like the front end was going to fall off - they didn't get the wheels tight

I was going to give them the benefit of the doubt and bring one of my other rigs by for tires, seeing as this transaction didn't work for both parties.

But, after the loose wheel fiasco - they can forget any repeat business or refererals.

So I went up to Big O and ordered some Goodrich All Terrains and they will have them installed by tomorrow morining. They also told me the Bighorns would have worked as long as they were inflated to the proper level for hauling a load.

Businesses should really spend more time training their employees...

You should be able to plug that trailer brake controller right in! All American trucks with a trailer-towing package from the early '90s - on have a plug-in under the dash for a brake controller. It'll be somewhere close to the brake light switch. Plug in and go! The only thing you might have issues with is the placement of the controller itself. It needs to be in a conveinient and safe place so that you can access the trailer brakes manually, if you need to. I sold trailers for several years.

Hudsonkid, After checking the fuel pump fuses, probably under cover in the box under hood on drivers side, get under the tank and rap on the fuel pump or tank and it may work. If it works still needs replaced as motor in pump has a bad spot. It may fail again anytime. Just some experience I have had with these.

    Good luck

I wish that were the case - this is a 98 Silverado and there's no plugin for the brake controller that I can see - my understanding is GM didn't build this into the harness until 2003+?

In fact I have old wiring from the brake controller that was installed still sitting there - but I don't trust it to use it - I'll do a professional install instead of the hack job the previous owners did.

Which brings me to another rant - why remove an electronic brake controller after you've installed one? They're not that expensive and removing the controller sans wiring is kinda dumb in my book - but maybe that's just me?

I wish I had a picture of the job hudsondad did of wiring the brake controller in the tahoe, last time we towed something on the trailer. Function, yes, pretty, no. What's really funny, is what hudsondad did as a career for many years, does not reflect this approach. I thought it was great!

29Vic, i'll give the rappa test a college try. i heard this before, but figure I'm going to drop it anyhow, maybe it will be less painful, if I could run a few gallons off. Geez, starting the tahoe, takes, what, a gallon or two anyway...

The 1998 model does not have the plug in fuse box for controller harness. 1999 and up have this.

Be sure to check before drilling any holes into dash for wires , electricial and AC parts.

These are great trucks , I have 300,000 miles on one.

These were the last of the really great Chevy trucks. I loved my other 98 tahoe, and that's why it was so easy to get another one after the accident. I'm wondering though, a radiator, battery, and now a fuel pump, maybe this one is starting that ole money pit thing...

:)Sorry to hear about your trip to Les was not good ,Last too trips in were bad. Lug nuts loose on both fronts, not balanced right. Good luck with the wiring. And we both know it only rains a little in the NW. John drivergo2

My 1/2 ton truck I bought in 98 was only 8 years old w/111k miles = 2 weeks later the transmission went out , no warranty so it was my dime.

Your "new" Tahoe is what 10 years old now? That list-o-parts is nothing but standard wear and tear replacement parts - although a PIA anyway, that wouldn't be enough to make me think its a money pit or lemon - how many miles are on your rig?

just turned 100K. I know, it's one of those things that gets ya, My other one had 117K on it, and nothing was wrong with that one. It seemed to be better built or something, maybe better maintained. A lot to be said about those lease vehicles

    Hay Kid,

Love the new truck. I am partial to GM heavy hawlers. Have a 60 El Camino, 69 GMC "hot rod" and my tow truck is a 2002 Chev 4 wheel Drive with the Vorteck. Great combination.....

Hey Dan, congrats on the new rig. You'll be happy with a dually over a single tire rear just because of the footprint. It's much safer in wind and storm situations. I was in the tow business for 20 years and would never have a tow rig with single rear axle. My current hauler is a 1981 Chev CrewCab ramp truck. People think that it's a single use type of vehicle but it hauls a load of lumber or pipe with ease!

My buddy has a 05 Ford F-350 dually with the turbo diesel. I'm not a fan of ford, or diesel, but we had to move a car once, and the onl trailer he had at his disposal, was the enclosed trailer. He told me that once it was ooked up, you wouldn't notice it was there. He was right, it was like driving down the road with nothing. If I was gonna tow a lot, I wold look at a dually, with diesel. for sure.

For what it's worth, the tahoes tow fair at best, the crosswind will get you bad, and if nothing else, it sorta gets the job done.
