1964 Pontiac Star chief fuel pump problems

I recently acquired a 64 pontiac starchief. I am having fuel supply problems. I put on a new fuel pump that ran for 1/2 hour in the garage and only two blocks down the road. There is a canister mounted on the front of the engine block resembling a filter on it has a line in from the fuel pump, a line out to the carb and a return line to the tank. After two new fuel pumps I never could get fuel to pump through this can. I can blow through it as easy as a straw. Hence, I bypassed it! Is this the cause of going through fuel pumps? I have been told that this is for releasing too much pressure on the pump back to the tank. The last pump worked fine for about 5 miles untill I stepped on it a bit then out it went. I am thinking that the pressure is blowing the pump? If I have to have this canister where can i obtain a new one, and obstruction isn't a problem with the old one anyway, just doesn't want to pump through it. It will fill it but no further? Any help would be much appreciated!

One other matter, I drove this car about 30-35 mph and the rear end vibrates like the wheels are about to fall off! Id this a rear end problem, maybe just needing greased? The car sat for 23 years before I obtained it. I have changed the rear tires, no help! Thank You!

It sounds like an add on filter that allows for the excess gast to return to the tank. Do you have the original engine in the car? It's difficult to tell what you actually have without seeing what it looks like. If you could post a picture, I think someone here would be able to let you know what you have.

I believe that the filter for your fuel system should be the stone filter that is behind the fuel inlet nut on the carb.

When you changed the rear tires, did you balance the wheels? Did you check to see if the rims are in good condition and not bent? Have you checked the differential fluid? Have you checked to see if the axle bearings are good? Are you sure that it's from the differentail and not a universal joint? Can you run the car up on good jack stands to watch the rear wheels? Are all the mounts for the differential attaching it to the body in good condition? Are the rear springs in good condition?

A close inspection of all componenets may produce the problem.

    Thanks Ron,

You have me convinced I will find the rear end vibration! The fuel pump though? The filter is a brass one at the carb inlet, this canister has no resistance to blowing through it whatsoever as a filter would. I believe the car is all original. Why am I blowing fuel pumps? The only thing that makes sense to me is that this can does release over pressure back to the tank relieving stress on the pump, however I can only get the pump to fill it and not pass on through to te carb. Maybe have to find one at a salvage and try it?

So, are you saying that the car will not run with this can connected? Even if it did stop the fuel, it shouldn't ruin the pump.

Have you gotten the car running again by by-passing the can? Has it run for a longer time and is everything ok? If it is, then I suggest that you just run it that way. As long as you are filtering the fuel before it gets to the carb, you'll be alright. I just can not imagine this thing ruining the pump so quickly.

Are you able to get a picture of it. I am curious.

    Hope some of this helps.
