53 merc compression

how high can I bump the compression and still run on pump gas and not over heat my flattie ? Im new to the flathead world and I have a good running stock 53 merc flathead that Im thinking about hoping up. any help would be great..... thanks..

I know you have heard this before “It Depends†on what you are running.
As a general rule, you really cannot exceed 9.5:1 or 10:1 compression and run on pump gas. There are exceptions, of course.
I know people running 10.5:1 on Premium Unleaded pump gas. I also know a few that have 11:1, but suffer some problems like over heating, detonation (ping) and plug problems.
For a nice Flathead, that is streetable, 8.5:1 to 9:1 is plenty of juice. I would go with the 8.5:1 myself. -
does anyone know what the ball park compression ratio would be on my 53 merc engine if I put the latest edlebrock heads on it. would it raise it from stock? with a edlebrock 4bbl intake also, would I feel a noticeable difference in power? ..... thanks for all of your help so far.
