1953 Dodge Pickup CD Player Question
-
Hello,
My father has a 1953 Dodge Pickup in great condition except the radio just broke on him. It was a casette player that was installed quite a few years ago. I would really like to replace it with a CD player for him for Christmas but I'm not even sure if this is an option considering all the technology out there. All of the players seem to say that you need professional installation but I'm sure that no one at Best Buy is going to know how to install something in a classic car. Does anyone have any recommendations for me? Is there anything specific I need to be considering?
I would appreciate any and all help. Thank you!!!! -
Don't let them hack up your dash! You don't say if the cassette player is mounted in-dash or under-dash. If it's under, there is a plastic receptacle designed fo underdash-mounting of nearly any DIN-style audio equipment (those that require a rectangular hole for the entire head unit). I have one in my '66 Dodge, so I did not have to cut on my pristine dash at all; just drilled a couple of small holes under the dash and mounted the stereo. No idea who makes it, but any audio store worth a hoot should know what I've described to you."The time has come", the Walrus said, "to speak of many things. Of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and kings. And why the sea is boiling hot,
And whether pigs have wings..." -
Not to worry, they will about all say pro installation required. NOT SO. It will have the wires all color coded and where they go to and about any fairly intelligant person can wire it properly. Heed the advice on not butchering the dash, If it does not come with an under dash bracket one can easily be made. Know any teenage guys? most know about these things as they put them in their own cars.

Thank you both! That was very helpful. I will look into the under-dash bracket and I'm so glad that installation will be fairly simple. My father is going to be thrilled!

You might want to consider getting a unit with FM radio. That would give you the option of adding a satellite radio system later. You can also find FM converters on eBay that you can add to your AM radio. Starting at around $500.00 there are several company that make reasonably correct looking radios with all of the modern technology. I saw one at the Charlotte Auto Fair that looked good and sounded great. Try an internet search for "vintage car stereo."
