Troubles with 320 Packard V8

    I have a 1955 custom Hudson equipped with a 320 Packard V8.

It ran pretty good but was chocking down on take off and finally it quit on me. But would start back up and drive about a mile before it would stop again. I have put plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points and condenser, checked timing, checked compression (it is 95 to 120). Pulled the carburator, cleaned, adjusted, even hooked a container of fuel above engine and let it gravity flow to carburator. Fuel output from fuel pump to container has a good flow. Now after all of this I have a bad engine surge at all speeds. This car is a 6 volt positive ground.

Does anyone have any ideas or had a similiar experience with the 320. At this point I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Check the primary wire in the distributor, it runs under the breaker plate, they can get next to the dist shaft and get the insulation rubbed off and short to ground, then as things cool off pull away till things heat up again. Also check the pad inside the lid of the air filter, make sure it's not loose and dropping down on top of the card. Little things most people don't think about right away, I've had both these things happen to me over the years, and they're hell to find if you don't think about them. Good luck.

Thanks Steve E. you pretty well hit the nail on the head. When ever I pulled the distributor out to check it the primary wire terminal was turned to the side at certain speeds the vacuum advance would pull the point plate around and kill the engine, as it died the vacuum would drop off and the engine would start running again. Back and forth just like a clock. Put a 4 mile run on it at 70 mph run good, plenty of power no coughing or sputtering.

I have one more question - When shutting engine off it wants to keep (cycling) running for just a split second. Any ideas on this?

Check ign timing, could be advanced too far, also check to see if carb is running too rich, perhaps the choke isn't opening all the way causing an overich mixture, causing run on.
