    Hello

I have a 53 Pontiac Chieftain with a flathead 8 cyl. In top of the head it says

"High Compression" 514370 GM6. Can anyone please tell me what engine this is?

    Thanks

If it's an original engine, I would say that it is a 268.4 C.I.D., 122 H/P, 7.7:1 Compression ratio. It will be connected to an automatic trans.

The other 8 cylinder also was a 268.4 C.I.D., 118 H/P, 6.8:1 Compression ratio, and was connected to a standard shift trans.

The engine number is located on a pad on the upper left front corner of the cylinder block. The number is the same as the V.I.N. number.

    Hope this helps
