packard overheat problem
-
hey packard pro's......we tackled my 38 packard (flathead 6 cyl) overheat problem today.... first checked for the thermostat in the top of the head, and found none....... then by the limited information in the packard service manual I reciently ordered, we were led to the shuttle valve or whatever it is on the top side of the radiator.... some one had a bolt wedged in it, holding the plunger to the pulled out position...we removed the wedged in bolt, and unbolted the rod which connects to this plunger thingy, and the plunger then went in........we started the car, let it run forever, and it never got over 175 degrees.....which is great..... so, that must be in the open position when the plunger is in.... anyway, the rod which connects to the plunger mechanism and runs back over the top of the radiator and to the front of the grill section is what we don't understand.... it will not move,,, must be froze up or something.....we really can't see where it is going or what it is connected to without removing some sheet metal,, which would be another major undertaking....... can someone kinda explain how this works to me....
thanks

I think it must operate shutters in front of the radiator, hence no thermostat in the cyl head.

thanks steve.... now I have an idea what to look for...

the engine temperature is regualted by the shutters in front of the grille. when the car is cold the plunger is suposed ot be allthe way in adn the shutters closed. as it heats up the plunger comes out and moves the rod which goes to the pivot on top of the shutter-stat adn pushes the rodforward which thoirough a mechanism at the top of the grille opens the shutters.
yoiu can run it just fine with the shutters open, however if it runs at 175 with the shuters wide open in miuld weather it is likely to overheat in hot weather -
It would be a good idea to check the water distribution tube in the block, it's usually located behind the water pump with a bent over tab against the block. If you have the shop manual, it should show where it is along with steps to remove/install it. Good luck.
