Hi, I just bought a 1956 dodge custom royal and when I was cleaning the engine I unearthed a sticker on the valve cover saying super red ram and was wondering what that means. How do I figure out what type of engine and what size it is? any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance...Jim

In 56 Dodge had the "Red Ram" V-8 engine, 270 cubes, 7.6:1 compression ratio, 189 brake horsepower, 2 bbl carb.

"Super Red Ram" 315 cubes, 8.0:1 compression ratio, 218 brake horsepower, 2 bbl carb.

"Super Red Ram" 315 cubes, 8.0:1 compression ratio, 230 brake horsepower, 4 bbl carb

    Jim,

I know this is an old thread, but I have a client who wants to sell a 1956 Dodge Lancer Custom Royal w/ the 2bbl carb Super Red Ram engine. Her Aunt bought it brand new and my client used it in her wedding, ending up with the car for many years. It has been started in 8 years. Her husband wanted to restore it for their 50 wedding anniversary, but died on cancer in 2006. The stainless is in great shape, the only rot I can see is a small amount in the outer door sill rockers, which may be due to her son sanding down the area, but never primering it (he was going to restore it years ago). It needs paint (the body is in good shape, just oxided paint and some light surface rust). It has always been an Arizona car except the 1st year owned which was in California.

Any ideas on how rare (or not rare) this car is, what would be a fair asking price (I wish I could buy it), parts availability, etc.

Any help from anybody would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.....Jay

The best way to sell something is to let people see what it looks like. Descriptions will never do the car any justice.

If you have any photos of the car feel free to post them here, or feel free to send them to me and I would be happy to post them for you. Also a price range that they would like to get for the car.

    Thanks

    Ron

Sorry Tom, I decided to get the car. Traded some estate tax work for her. Got to get it running, but other than a driver rocker, she is rot free in all the floors and trunk pan, and only some surface rust on the exterior. Thats the one nice thing about Arizona!

Just got an original Stromberg 2bbl for her today (the original one was missing).

    Here's some pics:

All 57 Dodges had a 325 cid engine irregardless of the heads or carburetion used on it. The 318 looks identical and came out in the 57 Ply Fury. Didn't make it into any othr cars till 59 or 60.Best way to I.D. Mopar engines is to get the car model from the engine no and compare it to a Motors manual. Engine no is usually in front of the valley cover, between the intake manifold and the water pump. It will be the prefix and will be similar to, D8, S22, P25, C51 etc.

Check the older Motor's Manuals. They give all the model codes in the engine specs page, D-63,

    D 8, D 24, etc.
